@ AceJay Thanks i knew it was some where along those lines.

@ Kon I didn't know that was even possible.

meh, I think that if i ever get another flat or fat PS2 i would do the hardware mod and use the Magic Swap. I do happen to have a second PS1 system (if i can ever find it, buried in my room somewhere) i would like to mod that to do Imports. Any suggestions?

you dont even need to mod a PS1. look for the little switch in the back (PSX) or front (PSone), depress it.

put in a domestic game, turn power on, the disc will speed up, remove it them insert the import, now the black PSX screen comes up.

listen to the motor while watching the disc this time, the disc will slow down to its original speed then speed up again. after a couple seconds, the disc will slow down again. swap back to your domestic game.

after a second the disc will speed up again, swap to your import game. the screen will go black, then load your game.

there ARE problems with this method, however. on PS1 systems when you swap discs for any reason (whether its a game shark, swapmagic PS1, or this trick) the music doesnt work properly. see, what happens is the domestic game's track list is grabbed here and no domestic PS1 game has as many tracks as a JP PS1 DDR game. some times the music just wont play, other times it will be randomly late or early. i dont recommend this method for playing DDR, but for everything else it works great. i use it to run "back ups".

Very interesting, I'll have to look in there for the swtich. Well at the very least i should try to get another PS2 and do it that way.

Does Swap Magic work with PS1 games running on a PS2 system?

unfortunately, no. i've heard gamesharks and action replays will do the trick with a flip-top modded PS2 though, but i have a JP PS2 and a PS1, so i go that route for PS1 imports and burned games.

By any chance the switch is under neath the CD-ROM drive? Cause I found the PS1 in question. This one has an interesting story to it.

I found this PS1 system lying around some junk that was waiting to be tossed out (this was at an outdoor flea market), even though I already have a PS1 I still took it. Now here's the interesting thing. There are no screws holding the top half of the system (tray lid, power button, reset, etc) from the bottom half, which is a SCPH-5501 (This is the one that have the extra port in the back for the Gameshark or AR device), but the top half had to have come from another PS1 since it doesn't have the removeable cover for that port. Also the part that holds the CD into the tray is missing (or it broke off) so I need something that would help keep in place the CD.

I'd figured since the system is broken, well not completely broken as I tested it out and it does work, I would mod it.

The top half must've been from a SCPH-900x, since you said there was no cap for the GameShark port. The switch in question is in the back right of the CD tray. IIRC, it's a round, gray button.

That you can jam with a spring (bend one end, so it points downward and wrap the spring to the "stalactite") to make it keep spinning while the lid is open. The button has a whole in the middle, I think.

Personally I didn't know what this was for, we only did it for convenience.

EDIT: The port at the back is for LAN gameplay. I believe Doom and Quake used it, but don't credit me on that. It just simply was underused.

Thank you so much, Lord Toon!

All that button was was a switch to "tell" the console that the lid was closed. And the port in question is (when looking at the back) the wide one on the far left. The link cable port (for linking consoles) was the smaller port next to it.
