I want to venture off from DDR, and DrumMania is catching my attention. Is it a good game? What can I expect from it?

Yes, expect it to be challenging (IIDX ish learning curve.)
Unless of course you already know how to play the drums.
Even my father knows that DM is a superior game than playing Drums in Rock Band.

I've played the arcade version, n I think if u wanna improve your drumming skill, DM is a must-play...
And the songs are great! I crushed on Asaki because of DM..

Well I'm very patient person (learning Japanese, putting up with stupid people, etc...) so learning won't be a problem.
Are the songs really all rock? Is there any NAOKI or Taka in there?

DrumMania is incredibly fun. Getting up to 30s is not that bad, but getting from 40s to 60s is pretty tough, and from 70s to 90s is just a huge leap. Right now I'm in the upper 70s range, and I've passed one 89, Children's Sketchbook.
Seriously though, vastly superior to rock band and guitar hero. Not even a close comparison.

I don't want to completely derail the thread, just looking for opinions. Why is this game better than Rock Band? I personally think it is an overall better game music-wise and it is a bit more realistic (more drums), but I just wanted to see what you guys think.

I love how my father was able to draw this conclusion too. Now he actually plays Guitar and Bass (and obviously neither GF or GH/RB are "realistic" in terms.) AND since he works at Guitar Center I may soon be able to get a nice discount on a Yamaha DTXPRESS model.

Should have defined what I meant by "realistic". I meant that as in the number of drums the game had totaling the number of a normal drum set.

The pads give a much more realistic response, they're laid out in such a fashion that feels like an actual drumset, the kick pedal isn't a piece of crap, and lastly, the music choices are endless, as well as awesome.
My one complaint is that the hi-hat could be a little higher. Cross-sticking is much harder than it should be due to it's height, but it's still completely possible.

Well, I'm no drummer whatsoever. But for me Drummania was always the superior game
(speaking about the default controllers for RB/GHWT and DM arcade set)
The layout of the drums and the feeling is completely different from RB or GHWT where you feel like hitting some piece of plastic or rubber. On DM drums it feels "right", "realistic".
The variety of music and the actual choice of it is better for me as well that I actually hear the drums I play is better for me. It does not happen to me in RB or GHWT even though I should be able to notice it.
Next thing is that I concentrate on playing the drums and getting FC or perfects. I don't wait for overdrive or such and there are no "solos" where you can play whatever you please. I rather follow whatever notes I'm tossed at.
I can sync to DM not to RB. If I'm out of sync in DM I fail. If I'm offsync in RB I get over 90. (isn't that weird?).

Seeing that DM uses an actual Yamaha DTX, despite not playing it, just looking at it makes me know it's a better game. My only complaint it having the cymbal at the far right side. While it's a decent riding surface, I don't like having to reach all the way there to do a crash (this all from actually having a full, five-piece kit. Also, there's only 2 toms, but I don't really mind that, either.)

Maybe V6 will have adjustable drums. *sighs* If only.
In answer to the question about the drum number: It totals the standard beginner set every drummer ought to start on.
Hi-hat x1 (naturally
Snare x1
Tom x2
Crash/Ride x1
Bass x1
I wish there were a pedal for the hi-hat so I could control the noise. I find my left foot moving reflexively to cover for nothing at all, and maybe an extra cymbal would be nice.
The fact is, Rock Band's drums don't even amount to a standard set. It looks to me like those bongo drums people playing with their hands (which is actually kind of fun, so I'd reccomend trying that on Rock Band).

If there's one thing I really don't like about RB drums, it's that the closed and open hi-hat's on different pads, despite being the same cymbals.

There are also BeForU songs made by him in it, so it's a pretty long list.
TAKA got Memories crossed from IIDX
Suggestion: as a starter, you should never use any autos from the beginning, as it could be rather hard to let go of it on higher levels
