You don't "make" background. If you want at least SOMETHING, buy a pack from Digital Juice.

I think a lot of you are being a bit hard on this game just because (most) of you don't like the guy that created it.
My thoughts:
It's actually not that bad to be honest. Business model aside, it's no different than having ITG around (although look at what happened to that) considering the ITG series is also just a DDR CLONE built on Stepmania. When it first came out did anyone know who any of the musicians in the first game were besides the licenses? Yeah, it sure seems pretty stupid and even idiotic to basically sell a reskinned version of a free game but if you take some time with it you'll see that it's more than just a simple reskin/theme. I mean some of these note charts can honestly be a selling point. I just played the unlockable Nyan Cat chart and I honestly had fun with that. It's kinda nice to see some of those forced, per chart mods which you HARDLY see in any simfile hosted on ZIv or BMS. Graphically, it could be better but I honestly think this is just as good as original SM 4 theme (I haven't seen the SM 5 theme yet.) There are some areas that could use some definite change but overall I think it's slight, minimalistic look could work in their case as you aren't overly confused by 20 different elements to look at in the span of a few seconds. It's a new game series and therefore you can't entirely down it just because you don't like how notes are or how they use a new set of icons that, at first, don't make sense. It takes all of two songs to figure out that one note = one step, two notes = jump/two taps, three = hands/ triple tap, and so on. Even the icon for mines makes sense when you see them in the chart. But really if you need THAT much help there's a freaking manual. When some of you first played DDR, ITG, PIU, or any other music game, did you honestly know what a held note did if you didn't see it in action before, or a rolled note, or even how to hit a triple/quad with or without using your hands? If it's new then it will obviously take some getting used to.
I can't say that I like how one has to purchase the multiplayer but really, DDR S*/S+, jubeat plus/jukebeat, Tap Tap Revenge*, Rock Band (Mobile), etc all are based on a "freemium" business model and this is almost that with the exception of having to buy features which would make it freeware I think.
* DDR S didn't even have anything else to buy, lacks multiplayer, and is "slightly" buggy according to some people.
**I know Tap Tap Revenge has free downloadable songs but we're just going to look at the base of the game.

Honestly, I think it could have potential, assuming that they improve on a few things (I think each song should have a background...The current bland bg is...Ugh!! Oh and honestly the block arrows look...Confusing... ), but I like how we're getting doujin/indie musicians in it.
Though I'd probably say this game would be for hipsters, but I digress. Its a DDR clone using Stepmania like ITG, and even though it isn't award winning (I don't understand why there had to be a made up "award winning" thing) and costs money (I'm sure it would do WAAAAAAAAAAY better if it was free, same goes for the DLC I mean $10 per song pack? Cheapskate!! :doh it really can be a good game.
Now you can -5 me all you want or ban me if you will (I swear to God if you do ban me...) it won't change my opinion.
So...Good luck with Pulsen, hopefully it'll come out good, but yeah...It be WAAAAAAYYYYY better if it were free.

Eh... I'll pass. Seems way to generic and bland to me. I appluade you for the effort though, creating a game is something I could never do.

Awesome. You get to build a jail and get to either feed or not feed the inmates.

I don't want to derail the thread, but I'll answer your fragment.

So, back on the rail:
I know we would all like it much better if the game/DLC was free. But the Pulsen creators would have no incentive to copy Stepmania and give it a crappy noteskin if they were not also going to charge for it.
I honestly can't give this game a chance at all.

But the thing is what's the difference between selling ITG and this game?
If all you have to say is "it should be free because of songs and stepmania" then go tell Kyle Ward he's an idiot for doing the same thing. If you can't give any other reason besides that then you're obviously just following the wrong train of thought and are just trying to fit in. I'm being honest here, some of you are hating on this for no real reason other than some people not liking it.

I have plenty of reasons.
1. The website originally said there would also be Mac/Linux versions. The Mac version "is to come", but seriously, it's Stepmania. That already runs on all 3 operating systems. What's the delay?
2. I'm not saying DLC has to be free. But it does have to be cheap. From what I've seen, it's $9 for 30 songs, I think. If it's supposed to be a "freemium" game, they should lower the starting price point. Otherwise, that defeats the purpose.
3. Renard appears to have several songs in this game. Pulsen does remind me a bit of Mungyodance, but if I'm not mistaken that was completely free. All software, all charts, all songs, everything. Would Renard actually support this if it seemed as if it was just like his past videogame project, but profit driven (and less/not furry)]? Just seems fishy to me.
4. "Pulsen Story". Seriously? It looks like it would pretty hard to come up with a decent story for this game, especially if it's intended to be "humorous".
5. Pulsen is intended to be a commercial version of Pulse Radar, another "award winning gem " from 4-Panel Footprint. Pulse Radar is, again, just like DDR, but apparently they can get away with that, because they're actually renting out entertainment for certain large events. Renting. They will charge you for temporary use of, probably, a projector, a projector screen, a bunch of dance pads, and their "special software". That's actually worse than iDANCE, and they charge fortunes for (purchasing) special sets for school gynmasiums and fitness centers.

Not a whole lot to be quite honest, which is why I was always against ITG.

Then why not be against PIU as well? Or rather why not be against Mortal Kombat since that's clearly a rip-off from Street Fighter. Seriously though. I think Pulsen will just come and go just like MGD did, if not go sooner. But I still support the crew's attempt though. Just don't see myself playing it much.Post #120 · Posted at 2011-10-05 06:33:16pm 12.9 years ago
