I actually think the edits are intended more to speed up just the arcade version, but were also applied to the home versions mainly so they could be arcade-accurate. Until DDR II came around, it felt like they just stuck with that pattern.

99% of players I've known are like "Win are yu doing this again plz/?/?/?/" About the only person I've heard vocalized against long versions is Arctic Wolves (IIRC), about it being like playing the same DDR-cut song/chart twice in a row. And I've seen nothing but enthusiasm about the BEMANI albums featuring full-length 3-5 minute versions of these songs.

I think Arctic Wolf was referring to a specific KO in DDR II... which was two copies of the same song stapled together.
