I prefer when the arcade is a bit less busy. I feel really anxious around good players, because I haven't been playing for as long as them and I feel like I'm judged on skill. I also need a good night's sleep before, and a lot of water and light, healthy snacks.

i end up playing better when other players are around, i have less fun alone

i love having a crowd, keeps things exciting

i honestly get distracted sometimes by people with bad / weird energy. the occasional bro or woman that makes fun of DDR. but even that's not really that distracting.

at teh same time i love it when the machine is completely empty!!!

Having enough food/water in my system.

I like crowds sometimes, depends on my mood. Sometimes I just wanna work on MA-ing stuff and passing new songs...but other times I like to play with people because I push myself harder and play songs that I wouldn't otherwise.

Healthy eating is a thing. If I ate something in the last few hours that makes me feel sluggish, I start to struggle with songs I would normally be comfortable with. This is especially important for DDR. If I haven't eaten anything for a while, it'll have a subtle effect on my stamina. Also, I need to tank up on water after every game, or else I'll start to feel dizzy. I can drink somewhere around 5-7 bottles of water on a good day.

My normal shoes are loose, and could go flying if I simply tried sprinting in them. Now, if I forget my good DDR shoes, or I come across a DDR cabinet on accident...

On the other hand, it takes a few games to bring my adrenaline up a bit when playing DDR. If I were to, say, play MAX 300 at the start of the day, I probably wouldn't even make it ¼ of the way. After 5 games, probably, if I'm in good condition.

Also, crowds are fun. This is true with any rhythm game, but especially true with DDR. It's pretty much impossible to make a rhythm game look easy, especially the higher up you go. Having a bunch of people stare at me in awe is always fun. I don't know if it really helps or hinders my game, though.

Honestly it depends on the machine for me...I remember when I was younger I was quite skinny and there were some machine in which the pads were thrashed.

Since that I was skinny you had to stomp on the arrows harder than necessary making it tough for me to play. (Sometimes even the holds wouldn't hold out despite me holding my feet down as hard as I could.)

So basically....

Boosts:

When people take good care of their machines
Friendly crowds

Hinders:

When they don't take good care of the machines.
Arrogant players. (You know...the guys who take the fun out of it for everyone? I knew a guy back in the day that would literally complain about what song you pick...When he wasn't even playing...)

Haha

Since all the machines around me are really old, they aren't in the greatest shape... so... what hinders me is a poorly kept machine with damaged pads, Especially relevant as of late, if I take breaks between playing games now, I notice that my stamina is way higher...

Agreed. We have the same problem in Kansas. Heck, one of the machine pads have gotten so bad that they have to turn the freeze arrows off. (For some reason the pad won't recognize weight for more than half a second.) It's a shame because the lack of playing has mainly been due to the machine itself...but try telling the staff at the Arcade that. Haha

I hate when kids/people stand very close to the machine or play on the opposite pad. I had one instance where a kid was watching me play mere inches to the right of me; it was distracting, I was afraid he was going to move closer and I just felt claustrophobic. I don't mind a crowd, but please don't stand/lean on the bar unless I know you.

Also had an encounter two weeks ago where some middle school kids were using the opposite pad bar as a jungle gym while selecting songs. Was wearing a heart rate monitor watch when one of the kids asked, "Is that a Fitbit?" . . .Annoyed I'm not here to answer questions while playing.

I'm not one to tell other people to leave me alone, but maybe I should.

"♪ ([u_u]) ♫"
This apply for DDR and Drummania arcades, as well as any other dancing arcade machine.

The things that boosts:
* No people around the arcades.
* If someone is playing, looking that he/she has already used all his/her credits
* My previously-chosen songs to dance.
* Being full of energy !!
* Having fun !!

The things that hinders
* Get tired after the first song u.u
* Some damn children that steps or chooses the undesireable option without your opinion. ò_ó
* Any duty that I have to do before the dancing arcades. T-T
* Distance. My arcades are a little bit far from my house.

That is all.

I've had it worse- The best DDR machine in town (And only one when Joey's moved) was located in this family restaurant who's main attraction was an indoor play structure and bouncy-castle for little kids. (They removed it this month, unfortunately...) The arcade was tiny, and thankfully usually deserted. When there were kids around, they'd run up to the grates separating the play area and the arcade- They also happened to be right next to the DDR machine, and I'd get a positive crowd right there.

The problem with little little kids, however, is that they don't know that you're not supposed to get close to the guy playing high-difficulty songs. Especially when they're 3 times shorter. Sometimes, little kids end up in the arcade with their parents, and while the older kids know better, you gotta watch out for the little little kids who will try to climb onto the pads while you're dancing and stomping about. Thankfully, parents usually catch them before they get kicked.

Otherwise, I haven't really had a toxic crowd. I guess they're less toxic when you live in a small town.

"Lettuce"
As me being the shy 14 year old I am, here's my list
Pro:When I get the machine to my self, good pads, people who support me (it helped me pass Pluto because of some tips and because of that it boosts my confidence), making friends.
Con:When there is a crowd, when my shoes are sticky, little kids who go up to me asking if I can play with them, and when I think all the good players think i'm bad.
To be honest I don't know my own limits, and because of that I end up doing a boss song just to see if I can survive it.
I get knocked out by a bus one time...it hurt.

Thanks to Round 1 I can no longer play Bemani sober.

Okay blaming that on Round 1 is a lie. They're just enablers.

Bro! The first couple of times that I played a rhythm game with freeze notes a handful of years ago (I don't remember which game it was) I thought freeze notes were roll notes. The machines I would find wouldn't hold weight well either, so I'd have to tap continuously to get them to register. The struggle is so real, trying to keep a good rhythm like that

The joint that connects your big toe to your foot starting to hurt about an hour into playing isn't helping my playing (also my general incompetence of clearing anything higher than a Heavy 8-9 original scale or an 11-12 new scale)...

Something I like:
- Fans next to the dance games
- Space between games (reduced noise pollution)
- Good machine maintenance

Things I don't like:
- High humidity/heat in the arcade
- Poor machine maintenance
- No local drinking fountain/water supply

Bonus Perks:
- Active/regular player base
- Lower light levels (reduced screen glare)
- Sufficient head clearance (I'm 6'-7" tall (200cm) and have been to some locations where the ceiling was too low for me to play DDR. Usually because a ceiling beam is crossing directly over the pads)
