This is a little competition. It's mainly just for fun, but getting competitive is always welcome too. Everyone knows about the famous NWC 1990 tournament and the extremely rare cartridge, but how well can you play it? Let's find out!
RULES -
1) You MUST use the default 6 minute, 14 second dipswitch time (It was 6.21 in the original competition, but bleh.). I can't enforce this rule as I can't tell if anyone's setting the thing to 9 minutes or something absurd like that, so just please be nice and don't cheat.
2) You MUST screenshot your final score screen for proof before it is pasted on the leaderboard. (Some emulators also have built in video recording support - if you can be arsed to upload your video to YouTube, you get a gold star and a big hug from me!)
3) You can have as many attempts as you'd like. Only your highest score will be on the leaderboard. Keep posting new high scores as soon as you get them!
4) Emulators are fine as I'm fairly sure not everyone has an NWC'90 cart lying around...
5) Deadline for scores will be the 14th of August.
6) This little NWC thing may turn into an actual ZIv Retro-Gaming-Challenge-Thing with various retro games and objectives to complete in them. If this gets enough attention, that is.
A PROBLEM I HAVE NOTICED IS THAT THE TITLE SCREEN IS A WHORE. TO GET THE GAME TO START YOU ACTUALLY NEED TO PRESS 2P'S START BUTTON.
LEADERBOARD -
Quickman - 905,450
Oni-91 - 824,940
Imationer - 615,625
vincentw - 415,200
????? - ???,???

That's the sound of me learning how to score on NES Tetris.
AHAHAHAHAHA

I suck at Rad Racer, but seems good for a first attempt.
EDIT: Got a huge improvement, image below. Question regarding this: should we append our best scores to the initial post or make a new one?

I think the score you get in Rad Racer is completely irrelevant after trying a few times. After Super Mario Bros, the only way you get points in Rad Racer is going forward. And since that's the whole point of the game, the only way to get a high score is to rush to Tetris with as much time as possible.

It would be helpful if you made a new one, otherwise I'd lose track of everyone's highest score because I wouldn't be notified.

This IS beatable. I had a right nightmare at the start of Tetris and crashed twice in Rad Racer.

I doubt I'll crack a million. I played pretty much as perfect as I could have here.

Why is Tetris so important to the score? Did Nintendo just assume the participants would suck at puzzles and be superior at reflexes?

Because once you reach Tetris, there's no end state until time runs out. It's no longer about racing once you've made it there, just about score-attacking.
Apparently the strategy for basically every person in championship was rush through the first two games to make it to Tetris, as Mario's score was only worth its face value and the score you got in Rad Racer was multiplied by 10 while the score you get in Tetris is multiplied by 25.
Something disheartening to me is that to even be CONSIDERED a serious competitor in the tournament, you'd be cracking a million easily. Guess we're all shit at video games.

I think it's a fantastically good choice. The first two games are all about getting through it as fast as possible, to earn as much time as you can for it, and so you're really up against the clock, your reactions have been tested and now all of a sudden it's a completely different type of brain game. It also helps that something as simple as Tetris gets amazingly tense when it's against the clock.
I'd make an educated guess that they also put it there because the massive Game Boy version came out a year before and they wanted to put it on a pedestal.

Back in 1990, I think people would be the best at Super Mario Bros. Of course, Super Mario Bros and Tetris are two games that you'd have to consider crazy to not put in the top 5 most popular games of all time, so it's hard to say.

Smaller because I learned to take screenshots with Nestopia. Also, I doubt I can get much more until I fix my SMB route.

There's a route that ends in 1-1. It's a great time saver.

Yup. My route ends with 5:03 on the clock. Remember, you only lose about five seconds for deaths. I have been able to get a perfect minimum 10,000 run, but on the route I do you really aren't saving time doing that.

Getting 400k after many 100k games is a happy feeling.
I had 2:10 left when I got to Tetris. I think it could be better.
