inb4 Quickman says "DDR is Dead"
http://fraghero.com/playstation-2-officially-dies-today/
Anywho. I know that this is a few days late, but I'm sure some of you have heard that the Playstation 2 is now officially dead. As of March 31st Final Fantasy XI has shut down it servers for good (now I dunno if the servers for the PC version is still up, can someone please verify that.) But since the PS2 version servers are down it marked as the last online functionality for the system.
R.I.P PS2 3/4/2000 - 3/31/2016

Crumbs. 16 years? I'm surprised that ANY console could last more than about 6 or 7 years. I guess it makes sense, though, since PS2 was the best-selling game console ever made. Besides, how many game consoles can claim to last more than a decade? The Nintendo Wii is the only one I can think of, since Just Dance is still coming out on that console along with Nintendo Selects.

Pissing about aside, it's amazing that the PS2 lasted that long. Although I would argue that the console was dead after the last game was made and not when the servers for a single game shut down.

It's funny because mine is on the verge of literally refusing to work completely

That's not funny, a child in Africa could have used that PS2...

Bahaha, I had a dream this morning they released another DDR PS2 game... dream-self was like "wtf I thought the PS2 was dead." But yeah, I'd've imagined everything internet related would've been axed at least by the time the PS4 came out; surprised as the next person it was still going.

The PS2 Was literally one of the best consoles ever made. Literally! It's Gone now, hopefully the PS4 can last as long as the PS2, because the PS4 is a really good console.

Talking seriously, I had some really good memories wih my PS2. Tony Hawks, Dancing Stage, Crazy Taxi, I loved playing on them all and more. I'm surprised the online servers were still going, about as surprised as I was when I found FIFA 13 on PS2 in the argos catalogue.
Alas, my PS2 now lays in my loft. Maybe i'll have to bring it out again, for old times' sake

There's already rumors about releasing a PS4.5 later this year; so by this logic, that would mean that Sony may release a PS5 by 2018 or 2019.
If you mean the PS4 lasting as long as the PS2 by online services & new software titles, there's no telling when that will cease as of now. I think the PS4 will be permanently discontinued LONG before 2029 (16 years after PS4's launch, if we're comparing it to the PS2's lifespan).

My original PS2 lasted around 10 years and only broke because my brother dropped something on it. My newest one is still going strong.
Sad news but every console has its time and this one's is up. Don't be sad over its loss, be happy for all the years it gave us of legendary games that will live on (Thanks emulators). I also hope the PS4 lasts as long too, it's a great gaming machine.

The great thing about the pre-HD era of consoles was the lack of Internet compatibility. The only thing you're missing out on if you play a Sega Genesis is the Sega Channel, and so forth. Now that every console is near useless without some proper internet connection, it will be hard to see people continue to respect those systems as they slowly lose their internet functionality. Imagine a scenario 2 decades from now where some dude wants to try the original Splatoon instead of one of its sequels but later learns he can't even play the main mode of the game because the servers have been defunct for well over 8 years.

I'm surprised it lasted for 16 years.
My PS2 kind of works, the VGA cables are broken, but it's still playable. If I never had one, I probably would have never been introduced to DDR and never gained interest in music games.

Ah the PS2, you had to have one for pop'n music and beatmania IIDX. One thing I found odd about the PS2. The GC, DC, and Xbox I felt had better picture quality especially when you leave the composite cable. Not saying the graphics were bad, just the picture quality even on component.

Current PS2 is still going strong, and have a backup in case that one goes.
Definitely one of my favorite consoles ever just for the sheer size of the game library. Nothing comes close to it when you talk about home console systems, it had something for everyone.

I still own a PS2 and it still works fine; its disc drive sometimes can't open properly, but I've discovered a workaround to that by pushing it in a little before opening it.
I've had lots of great memories with it, including the one time back in the late summer of 2013 when I finally beat that level of We Love Katamari where you had to roll up one million roses. It took me about seven or eight years to get that done; I blame the fact that I didn't realize you could restart the level from the pause menu to respawn a bunch of the roses and make things go by considerably faster until 2012.
