~UPSRT~
A Pokémon + Dance Game adventure for StepMania 5
---------- About -----------
Welcome to UPSRT, a Pokémon + Dance Game themed adventure for StepMania 5! UPSRT was created as a side event for the U.P.S. StepMania tournament held in January 2016.
Mute was kind enough to record the original UPSRT event as it occurred, so if you'd prefer to watch a video, you can check that out here: https://youtu.be/gzu0ZqADoZg?t=28s
Of course, if you'd like to play UPSRT on your own setup, keep reading!
---------- System Requirements ----------
You'll need to have StepMania 5.0.10 installed to run UPSRT properly.
Additionally, there are two settings in Preferences.ini that need to be manually set for UPSRT to function properly. The location of Preferences.ini depends on your operating system, and is documented here.
Please note that if you are using Mac OS X or Linux, the second of those preferences, VideoRenderers, will already be set properly as Direct3D rendering is not supported for OS X or Linux.
Finally, UPSRT only works in the "dance" game mode, so if your copy of StepMania 5.0.10 is currently set to pump or techno, please switch it to dance before starting.
UPSRT was designed with a 16:9 aspect ratio in mind, but it has been tested in 4:3 and 16:10 and should work fine in those, too.
Due to some engine-side changes and deprecations that will occur in StepMania 5.1.0, it is unlikely that UPSRT will work in that version of StepMania. At this time, there are no plans to update UPSRT to support StepMania 5.1.0, but that may change in the future.
---------- Screenshots ----------
---------- Language/Translation Support ----------
This release includes full language support for English, Spanish, and French.
There is a Korean translation included, but StepMania's support for Hangul bitmap fonts is currently limited, so many of the characters don't render properly. Sorry about that.
A future release of UPSRT may include a Japanese translation.
---------- Downloads ----------
The content for UPSRT is split into two packages: the theme and the songs.
UPSRT Theme (16MB)
UPSRT Song Pack (21MB)
----------Credits, Acknowledgments, & Thanks----------
– Main Team –
dbk2 - programming, original music
~HUGS~ - visual art
TaroNuke - mod scripting
~ Special Thanks ~
Mad Matt, kyzentun, teejusb - programming assistance
Mute - Simfile Sync
---------- Troubleshooting ----------
The screen displays as all white after getting through the introduction!
This is a render-to-texture bug in StepMania that occurs in some Windows computers when d3d is set as the primary VideoRenderer. You will need to set opengl as your primary VideoRenderer to resolve this issue. Refer to the System Requirements section above.
The screen displays as all black after getting through the introduction!
This bug also seems to only occur on Windows computers. It results from assets not loading properly due to permissions problems. A few things that can cause this include:
A. If the StepMania program is installed to C:\Program Files you will encounter permissions errors like this one. Assuming you've already installed StepMania to Program Files, you'll need to uninstall, and then reinstall to somewhere within your user profile folder, for example your Desktop or Documents.
B. If the UPSRT pack is being loaded via the AdditionalFolders= or AdditionalSongFolders= in Preferences.ini it seems that this can cause permissions errors on Windows, too. You can resolve this by placing both the UPSRT theme and song pack in their appropriate sub-folders within %appdata%/StepMania 5/ as documented here.
Enjoy!

It's amazing how much people have been able to twist the system in such a relatively short space of time. Genuinely interested to see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

I just updated the original post with the following (kind of important, oops) information:
UPSRT only works in the "dance" game mode, so if your copy of StepMania 5.0.10 is currently set to pump or techno, please switch it to dance before starting.
UPSRT was designed with a 16:9 aspect ratio in mind, but it has been tested in 4:3 and 16:10 and should work fine in those, too.

its a good thing that I didn't install 5.0.9
I so want to do this, thank god for Terabyte hard drives.
Not bad for a W.I.P, seeing its a bit short. Can't wait for updates.

I despise Pokemon but holy shit this is impressive, amazing job!

You know, this is like complaining that you can't take your Donkey Kong 64 (N64) cartridge and cram it into the disc drive of your Wii U and have it work. The difference between the modifier systems is huge.Post #10 · Posted at 2016-03-06 03:32:06am 8.1 years ago

It's not a work-in-progress, really. It is a completed effort, albeit one that amounts to ~20 minutes of gameplay. Those twenty minutes of gameplay took three people working round the clock for a month to put together. TaroNuke and HUGS probably worked a hundred hours each, and I definitely spent more like two hundred.
There probably won't be updates, at least not for a long time. We were able to all work on this during our respective winter breaks, but we've each since resumed full-time life responsibilities. Sorry about that.

Anything is possible with enough determination and reckless spending of time.Post #12 · Posted at 2016-03-06 04:17:10am 8.1 years ago

That's absurd. What gets in the way enough to slow work down so much?Post #13 · Posted at 2016-03-06 04:33:01am 8.1 years ago

Its all right. It just felt like a W.I.P as we don't get to the tower. I digress.

Thank you! It was fun to work on something other than Simply Love for a month. I hope to do it again sometime.

I can't speak for the other two people who worked on UPSRT, but my time spent included:
1. writing/organizing the plot, events, pacing, etc. of the game, and adapting all this as time started to run out
2. writing dialog
3. learning Lua metatables
4. devising a workflow between Tiled and StepMania
5. attempting to make my code modular/reusable (we originally envisioned the game being much bigger than it ended up being)
6. composing and mixing an original soundtrack (which you can listen to on SoundCloud!)
7. organizing a translation effort + fussing with fonts
8. testing on keyboard + debugging
9. testing on pad + debugging (which turned out to be quite a different experience than testing on keyboard!)

Pretty cool! Although a might have a problem? I played all of the songs (And probably failed lol) But when i missed too many arrows, It goes back to the overworld and the NPC tells me i beat him. Is that normal? And do i need to leave all of my other themes/songs out to play this?

This is a really good question, actually, and something I hadn't thought of.
Since UPSRT was designed to be demoed live at an event in front of people, we didn't want to risk the possibility that the person playing the charts might fail, or worse yet, keep failing the same chart over and over again.
So, I wrote the code to always assume that you had beaten your opponent, even if your lifebar went too low and you "failed." We also set the fail setting to "ImmediateContinue" so that all the songs would play through to completion.
But, you've demonstrated that if the player (you) has fail turned on that it is possible for the song to end early and still have the gym leader indicate that you've beaten him. I hadn't considered that!
There are two solutions for now:
1. change your fail setting to ImmediateContinue, or
2. wait until later tonight for me to release UPSRT v1.1 with this problem fixed for all fail settings

I will wait until tonight. Here are some suggestions to think about updating:
*Your own Pokemon
*A lifebar (Pretty much nessecary)
*Type advantages (If you can pick out of more than 1 poke)
>More damage to opponent, Less damage to you (and vice versa)
*Heals for your pokemon (Or for you!)
*Please make the Windeu battle!
Anyways, Keep up the good work!
