I use 3.9 as my main. :/ I DO go to 5 from time to time, though.
Even though I'm fine with 3.9, it does have problems that irritate me. For instance, the BGChanges engine has a glitch where if you jump to the beginning of a video, it shows one cache'd frame before actually doing that. This makes, say, freezing on the first frame of a video for stylistic purposes impractical because it won't show the first frame, but rather the cache'd frame. You need to use a .png for that. Aside from that, it just...looks wrong and glitchy even without the need for still frames. I haven't checked if Stepmania 5.0.10 has this problem.
Beware, however, did work around a lot of the constraints StepMania 3.9 had for his DDR Extreme simulation, INCLUDING the BGChanges problem.

From the way I see it, if you're still stick with 3.9, you might be very resistant to change/live off nostalgia, enjoy stability, or just plain old do not like other builds that are available. I mean, yes, there are quite a load of themes for 3.9 and a huge collection of noteskins, but so does SM5. Not to mention, the new features that SM5 contain are really nice and makes it look like a standalone game rather than a clone of DDR.
Sometimes, people just really know how to confuse me...

Every item on the wheel has a color-coded background. Red is for random (only picks from the current folder), purple is for folders, cyan is for the current folder, grayish is for songs. The hard part of navigation is realizing that stuff can be more than a single layer deep, and you have to close the current folder to go to a different one. (L+R+Start is a shortcut for closing)
