I recently bought an Extreme Arcade cabinet, but the CD-ROM Drive appears to be slowly dying.

(For instance, every other boot ends up with a "Hardware error" and another reboot.)

I googled (this forum included), but all the information on replacing the drive seems to be roughly 5 to 10 years old and I'm sure quite possibly out of date.

Is there any recommended CD-ROM Drive that can be bought new (or brands that typically have good results) and tends to work well with Extreme (bootleg, I'm sure) hardware?

Also, I'm totally bummed, I swore I thought I had an account on this forum back when DDR Dance Wars was out but uh. . . I guess not? :-)

Any of these CD-ROM drives are known to work in the System 573 Digital.

So as I stated, I've found info like this via Google previously.

And there's definitely a lot of good information there.

The problem is the majority of those drives listed there can't be "bought new" today, because they haven't been manufactured for 10 to 20 years.

For instance, let's take the Toshiba XM-5702B.

Here's the press release of its announcement, from October 16, 1996:
* https://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/press/1996_10/pr1401.htm

So yes, I understand I could try to gamble buying a 10 to 20 year old, used CD-ROM Drive and see if it'll last longer than the one I have which is already failing, but in all likelihood it will be dead on arrival.

So let me restate the situation if I wasn't clear originally:

I want to replace a failing CD-ROM drive in a DDR Extreme Arcade machine with a brand-new, store-bought drive manufactured in say, the last year or two (2014 or 2015).

Has anyone done a similar refurbish in recent years and can suggest a good brand or model that tends to work?

I believe those are the only known drives to work, other than the other few drives that http://rhythmarcade.com/wiki/arcade_machines/system_573 lists a couple more that I have not listed. It suggested to search "GDR-8164B" and "Lite-On LTD-163" on eBay. I checked and I have found a new GDR-8164B. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-pc-of-Hitachi-LG-IBM-GDR-8164B-DVD-ROM-BLACK-/301748871929?hash=item4641a262f9

Betson will sell you one, but it will cost you an arm and a leg.

I assume it works anyway...
