So back in the old days,Holic Heavy was considered the standard if you could play DDR correctly haha
Does that still apply now or is there another song that has taken its place?
What the hell does U1 smoke to come up with EGOISM 440?

"five minute white boy challenge"
Unnecessary thread is unnecessary. But, personally, I think that, to this day, MAX 300 is the song to replace it.

Approximately nobody asked for this song to be included. Least popular decision by the Japanese since Nintendo released the Wii U.

It seems like the song to impress. It's one of the hardest songs on a LOT of machines and nowadays it's pretty infamous. Everytime I play at the arcade, MAX 300 seems to draw a bit of a crowd.

I never knew Holic to be the standard. Back in the day the standard for if you knew what you were doing seemed to be Captain Jack. Captain Jack was obsoleted by Rhythm And Police when 4th Mix came out.

A lot of songs like Captain Jack and Rhythm/Police with crossovers thrown into streams also work. For that, I call your crossovers and raise you gallops and 32nds in TSUGARU.

Back in my day, the standard was...well there was none I was like 7 lol. I've heard all sorts of different standards, be it the ones mentioned here, MATSURI JAPAN, or even PARANOiA. Anyway, talking today, I think generally any 15/old scale 10 would be the "standard", although especially MAX 300. Even failing two thirds of the way through PARANOiA Survivor I had a couple people watch me impressed the other day. At the end of this discussion, I feel seewhatIdidthere that there really doesn't need to be any sort of standard of "YOU CAN GOOD". People can play all casually with their Butterflies and their Captain Jacks on beginner, or they can be trying the hardest songs on their machines, but they are all technically playing correctly in my eyes. Perhaps a bit more philosophical and maybe rant-y than the answer you'd be looking for, but that's just what I think.

TL;DR 10s or 15s depending on rating scale, MAX 300 most notably as far as the "correct" answer would go, answers will probably vary a bit.

From my personal experience on a local 4thMIX machine back in the day, DROP OUT was played a lot as a "standard" of how quick could you read. Otherwise, PARANOiA Rebirth in 3rdMIX was *the* 9 to beat.

Since DDRMAX, MAX 300 trumped everything.

Captain Jack is lol worthy but Holic isn't? Did you miss the part in my post where this took place 3 games before Max300? Captain Jack is a 3rd Mix song, Rhythm and Police a 4th Mix song, and Max300 a 6th Mix song. Even when Max300 debuted it wasn't the standard, it was the pinnacle. Even in Extreme, 10s weren't the standard for someone who knew how to play. By Extreme the game had evolved into PA/MA, you had players with 100+ AAAs that couldn't pass 10s, and people are gonna say they don't know how to play? Go lol at someone else.

"five minute white boy challenge"
today max 300 is the song, no real two ways about it

besides at 3rd mix i'm fairly sure it was either dynamite rave or afronova, and for the record i've never heard of holic being the standard at all, there was

- paranoia
- afronova
- max 300
- paranoia survivor max

and then there wasn't a 'standard' at all after EXTREME because the scene was dead, and max 300 is probably the most popular 'hard song' to date, so that's why i said it

Not sure if you consider standard "DDR pro" or something sorta below that. Geez, I still have issues with Max 300's speed ten years later; I feel like a scrub Tongue

I'd've said Rhythm and Police was the cool kids' standard some 6+ years ago when I rose above newb status, anyway. HV:AM was leaning more toward actually impressive. Tack on So Deep, Cartoon Heroes, and probably Sakura for the whole "are you good at this game" test for our group back in the day. Nowadays um... Iono, the community seems too divided between new officials, old officials, and customs to come to a consensus, I think. I'm still biased toward the older songs to insist on something new being a good standard.

Maybe Max 300 is just the high-to-me standard now because there are so many more difficult charts now... that I still kind of avoid. Dead

I never knew Holic to be the standard. Back in the day the standard for if you knew what you were doing seemed to be Captain Jack. Captain Jack was obsoleted by Rhythm And Police when 4th Mix came out.

Rhythm & Police wasn't in 4th Mix, but you're right, Captain Jack and End Of The Century were definitely the gold standard. If people wanted to show off on 4th Mix, they'd usually go into the Konami Original folder with Zukin (I think it was Konami Side B) and play End Of The Century, some Paranoia song and then Drop Out. Real show offs would do it on Doubles mode, to make Drop Out and End Of The Century much easier to full combo, while looking harder to onlookers.

Euro & Rave & Speed was the 'I want to show off but actually have fun doing it' folder, because it had Boom Boom Dollar Remix, Captain Jack and Turn Me On, which were all top-tier difficulty songs, but a lot less 'try-hard' than the Konami folder. It also had Ninzaburo, which a lot of players initially thought to be the hardest song in the game, until a website called ID MUSIC published a line-out of the song, and everyone got a chance to figure out the rhythm.

Looking at a songlist, I'd say that from memory, the songs most players considered top-tier in difficulty by the end of 4th Mix's life-cycle were :

Captain Jack (Single)
End Of The Century (Single)
La Senorita (Double)
Boom Boom Dollar Remix (Double)
Turn Me On (Doubles)

They were all considered huge achievements to pass. Whichever one was actually easiest or hardest was really down to the player, I think. A think a lot of people found Captain Jack to be the hardest, because very few songs at that point required that sort of attention to rhythm.

Back in 2004, the "standard" at my local arcade was stuff like Waka Laka, Witch Doctor, So Deep etc. Being able to do 10's made you a god. Later on (2007-ish, when I started playing again), it ended up shifting towards Max 300 and it's been like that ever since. Not that anyone plays anymore.... but yeah.

Rhythm & Police wasn't in 4th Mix.
@7:44, forgive me for generalizing but 4th Plus was out by the time we got 4th Mix.

Yeah, I think it seemed like a long time between those games, but I think that was just because 4th Mix came out at the start of summer, and 4th Mix Plus came out really early into the next year. I think there were probably only a few weeks between Holic being unlocked, and 4th Mix Plus actually coming out.

I only remember them being distinct games because of the dark age where our 4th Mix Plus CD got scratched up, and we had to go back to 4th Mix's restrictive song selection system. The Measure Of A Man (tm) on 4th Mix Plus was the new Maniac chart for My Fire Big Grin

Okay, so here's how I'm going to do this. I'm going to type the Mix name, the "standard", then the song that made you "godlike" in that mix.

1st mix: Trip Machine/Paranoia
2nd mix: SP-Trip Machine/Paranoia Max
3rd mix: Dynamite Rave/Paranoia Rebirth
4th mix: Paranoia Eternal/My Fire
5th mix: Healing Vision/Paranoia Eternal
MAX: Can't really think of any super-hard 9s/MAX 300
MAX2: Tsugaru or So Deep (Probably Tsugaru)/MAXX UNLIMITED
Extreme/Extreme 2 US: Sakura or Cartoon Heroes/PSMO
Extreme US: Trip Machine Survivor/The Legend of MAX
SN: Xepher or Trim/Fascination MAXX (What a difficulty curve!)
SN2: Unreal/Paranoia Hades (Pluto Relinquish's only hard part was the end)
X: On the Bounce/Trigger
Starting with X2, the Replicant D-Action songs are good tests of skill, and of course, we have VD.
X2 US (WHY HAVE WE BEEN FORSAKEN): Kimono Princess/Pluto the First
