Wow Hi guys! I haven't been on these forums for years and kind of kicking myself in the butt for it.

Now that i'm older, have my own income, etc. I'm getting back into beatmania/DDR games in Japan. Got a JP PS2 two months ago, finally played DJ Troopers CS (that I got as a gift 6 or so years ago) and now expanding my IIDX collection. I have the 4th Style and 7th Style and seen that Empress is something i should also invest in. But the only prices I see on ebay is 200$USD and I can't spend that much on a game... Especially with college classes coming in a week.

I just want to know if I should save up to get it (if it's a MUST buy that is) or is there other Styles that I should invest in instead?

Thanks! Big Grin

If you're talking an actual investment, then a used copy is worth about $150. From a collectors' point of view, it's a very sought-after game, very few copies of it exist, and it's the final PS2 game in a long series. Those are the three things that add value to a game, and Empress has them all. If I ever saw it for under $150, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

From a gameplay perspective, it's obviously the best game in the series, and has the largest songlist, but If you're not desperate to play Black Another, then everything below 10th Style is pretty cheap right now, and you could pick up the first 10 games in the series for the cost of one copy of Empress, so I think that's the best way to go?

I haven't even seen one under $200 to be quite honest... If I knew it was going to be like this, I would of begged for a copy when it came out years ago... And I'm nowhere near Another's yet (I'm still struggling with Normal 6-7's) But I've been improving pretty fast in the past two months. I'm just afraid if I wait and realize that I actually do want to randomly shell out $200 on one single game then I rather do it soon before the price goes even higher. (If that makes sense?)

Styles between 11-14, anything that is worth me buying as well? Or just everything 10 and below?

I had fun playing Happy Sky, Distorted, and Gold but to me, Happy Sky is worth it because I enjoyed a lot of the songs in there. although it also has a really late timing window, I still enjoy it. Doesn't help that I really like the design choice. 9th and 10th Styles are really great too although they don't rate the another charts.

Thank you so much for your feedback! I'll look more into Happy Sky as my next purchase.

More feedback is always welcomed! I don't know if I'm going for a full beatmania collection right now (more so doing that with DDR at this moment), but any other suggestions would be great!

My personal favorite songlist is from Distorted. It has a lot of my personal favorites like quell and Go Beyond!! and the site namesake, Zenius -I- Vanisher. The only game that I'd advise against is Troopers. I felt there were a lot of gimmicky charts like Paranoia Hades, Icarus, and Ristaccia.

If you have a PS2 to USB converter, you can download IIDX BMS and get a feel for which style is your favorite, even though the timing windows may be different.

I don't think it'll ever get any higher. The American collectors' market is all about hoarding items and trying to represent them as being more valuable than their 'going rate', wheras the Japanese market is more transparent, and there are nowhere near as many forces trying to fuck with the market and drive up prices as there as in the US.

New games cost a lot in Japan, and lose all of their value very quickly, because the average Japanese house doesn't have much room to store a load of used games. Because used games are something people are happy to quickly get rid of, the few games that people consider valuable enough to hold onto are a lot more valuable than their US equivalents. That's why the going rate of IIDX Empress is so high, but there's no reason it's ever going to get higher, unless people from outside Japan start buying up copies to drive up the price.

They're all worth buying, especially if you're at the point where you can still play and enjoy songs on the lower end of the difficulty scale. It's really hard to say which games are the best or worst in the series, because the music in IIDX has changed so much over time.

I think one factor to consider may be whether you rely on really high speed mods or lane covers, in order to play? The early games in the series don't have many options for mods, so you might want to play and enjoy them before you get too deep into the series? Most people who grew up on the newer games find it kind of hard to go back and appreciate the early games, because they don't have the quality of life improvements that have come into play since IIDX RED.

Haha, Too late for that, Already have it! (had it probably since it came out) But thanks for your input! I was looking at DistorteD for Go Beyond!!, I'll have to look at the songlist again and see if there's anything else that catches my eye. Also I'm thinking about getting a better controller since the one I have keeps sticking... So it may be a waste to get a USB converter right now? (maybe?) But I'll look into that more!

This is some interesting insight that I didn't know. So thanks for this!

The early Styles are rather... Aged... 4th Style has a very small songlist compared to everything else. But also it looks like songs that you don't really see on later Styles either. So it's kind of a win lose situation with that one Style in particular. I only really use the hi-speed options, I occasionally play with the Random mod (barely though) So the mods aren't really a killer for me. And song choice with the older Styles are something a bit more to my liking, though I don't mind DJ Troopers songlist either... But listening to the music on the recent Arcade games (Pendual, Spada, etc), I can't really get into those songs... I'm too use to the 2000's music from Bemani...

I did check amazon today and actually found one for $115! Still a lot but I know you said if it's under $150 go for it. I just hope it's still there next week when I get paid again.

EDIT// Alright I buckled... Bought it through Amazon for 115! I couldn't pass that up until next Friday... Still going to buy Happy Sky / DistorteD next (probably together in just one go instead of ordering them separately.)
