Week 7 - [Right On Time] - This week, I'll give more detailed feedback (with M#s) on & charts
Tomorrow - Good song! I like the video. Generally I don't like .lrc files since they distract me, but that can be easily fixed.
Good chart. I guess M51 was weird to sight-read, but not much else to say here.
Looks fun, too! I kinda like that it doesn't go exactly with the song in many parts.
Time - I'm digging the song. I like it.
I liked this chart. It wasn't too hard or overly stepped. There were a couple parts where I felt you were going to a bit too many things at once (stuff like M17) (I'm guilty of that sometimes too) and some places I felt needed just a 4th note on the start of a 4 measure/2 measure section (M54, M56, M58, M60, M62, M64, M66)
The Final Hour - Whoa, that cut of the song is so abrupt at the end. I'm sure there is a better way to end the song, maybe stick the end of the song there. not enjoying this song too much overall though
The first few Measures were a bit off to me. I didn't understand the rhythm choices of the opening. (But I guess it's hard to isolate anything there) The first streams of 8ths (middle of M11-end of 13) were maybe a bit too crossover-y. I think there should be a 4th note at the start of M18, to I guess remind us that this rhythm has been repeated 4 times now (or it's been 4 measures). i think you could do the same at the start of M52 There was one section that could've used some long Freeze Arrows (M31-38). Overall, though the rhythms were decent.
This is pretty much going to be a Stream of 16ths...isn't it? *plays the chart* Well, it was mostly a ton of 16ths. The patterns in the Streams were really hard for me to read, despite me normally being able to read stuff like this. I think pattern switches should be done in groups or spurts of 4 notes each. I think some of the patterns changed every 3 notes and it was challenging to read that way. To me that's unsettling, but to others, it might be. Sorry if I'm being vague. I'm not really sure how else to explain it. There is an awkward section around M36-M38 that requires doublesteps, which are annoying to do at this speed.
Retrospective - I knew this song was familiar as soon as I heard the song preview. then I researched a bit and realized it was on the free version of Cytus, which I ultimately uninstalled because the notes were all offsync. I forgot that the song ends like Choo-Choo Train (DDR 2013)
Really good. One tiny thing: in M56, maybe shift the first 16th down so it becomes an 8th note. Or just complete the run of 4 16ths.
Now and Forever - I kinda like the song
I don't really have much to say. maybe the crossover 16ths (M55-M58, M73) were a bit much? idk. Maybe the rhythms were followed a bit too closely (M59-71)? Don't pay too much attention here. Mainly just personal preference.
My Copycat - I think I only like this song for the chorus. I think I liked I'm So Sorry as a song better. As I listen to it more, I like how bouncy the song feels. At first I couldn't get the video to play but I was able to eventually.
chart was good. Only real problem was the ending, which spiked in difficulty with the 16th stream. Maybe you could keep the rhythm there, but make the pattern easier. You don't have to though. I'm just saying that that pattern doesn't fit for a 7.
Monstercat Live Performance - hmmm...there's so much going on in this song. I'm not so sure I like it. I was also a bit confused by some of the BPM changes in the middle of the song.
After playing the song a second time, the BPM changes make a bit more sense, but some of them feel a bit unnecessary. Right at the first speed=up there were some rhythm choices that went to the music but didn't flow too well together with the buildup (the 8th stream) following. Aside from what I've already mentioned, everything else was fine.
I think this song is a bit too much everywhere for my tastes. The BPM changes confused me even more with this chart (uh-oh). The chart was mainly good, but I had the same problem as with the beginning section of the 8th-16th stuff feels wrong this early in the song. I think some other rhythm could've worked, but ultimately it's your choice. That last 12th stream just felt awkward. It didn't fit too well in my opinion.
Midnight - Ugh, there's a little soundbite in the song that keeps making me think that my dad is trying to get my attention. The audio was really bass-strong; it was hurting my eardrums...
There was one doublestep in the first half somewhere (leading from M16-17). I also didn't like the way you handled the chorus (starting in m36). I think you could've still gone to the "MIDNIGHT" while going to the bass, too. Pretty good otherwise.
Lean On - Lol, I used part of this song in a Spanish Project. In fact the first time I had heard this song, was in summer contest, the first week.
Much better than the first submission by far. Good chart. Maybe could have used an extra 16th or 4th in some places to keep the flow, but it's pretty minor.
Linn 99 - wasn't sure if this was technically disqualified or not...but I looked at anyways. I'm having trouble enjoying the song, tbh
Chart is decent. The constant 8ths in the music doesn't really make for the best chart, though. I'm having a bit of trouble enjoying this. M4-8 felt somewhat understepped, but I felt having more would also be weird.
Last Friday Night - Interesting song. Probably could've fit Week 3, maybe. I seriously have to get rid of the .lrc file, because otherwise, I'm staring at the lyrics the whole time while playing the charts out of the corner of my eye.
I'm not really sure how to express my thoughts on this chart...Like it was good as a chart, but I felt that it didn't fit too,too well in terms of mood. Maybe i could say that I wouldn't have done it this way...
I really don't think this song needed charts that were too hard. The backbeat is too strong to be going to 16th drums...Also, I still find rolls confusing. How often do you have to step on them?
Hapistarlovelytime - Honestly you're gaining my attention with that 8th-note syndrome-causing stop at the beginning. Gimmicks like this that fit the song are what I love.
Pretty good! I'd just tweak the sections with the 5 16ths and the 8ths after it. I'd change the rhythms to 4th-16th-8th-16th-4th-8th-4th-8th 8th-4th-8th-16th-4th...(I hope that makes sense)
Einstein-Rosen Bridge - Wow this is a really weird song. So irregular and even more all-over-the-place than your other song choice. It's so unconventional and I'm not liking the odd-repetitions of rhythms.
Chart fit the song decently. But the song is what's killing my decision here.
Well this definitely fit the erratic nature of the song. It fit the song, but I don't know if it'll make the top few files of the week, for me...
The charts themselves were good, but song choice is sooo weird. I haven't found anything wrong with the charts.
Edge of the World - I like this song, but I think there was an awkward cut that was made that transitioned right into a slowdown.
Maybe a bit too much karaoke stepping. For example, in the 170 BPM sections with "Burn Away" (M51, B2-end of M62) in between the lyrics you have other rhythms which are good, but I don't think you should have done any more lyrical stepping until the next "Burn away". There are a couple other instances where I think karaoke stepping could have been replaced by something else. Pretty good otherwise. I loved the beginning of the chart and the end slow part by the way.
CHRONO DIVER -NORNIR- Hmm. The song is not as interesting or as great as I expected it to be, it being a big part of the Pendual interface/story, iirc.
I think you may have stuck a little too close to the melodies. I think there are other rhythms that could've been stepped that would have made the song more fun to "dance" to. Maybe some rhythms could have been combined (i.e from sections like M9-23). The rhythm is a bit too repetitive in these sections and they could be spiced up or varied a bit more (something like BeBeatstream's official Expert chart.)
Ashikawaakashinokazegafuku (My own romanization) - Pretty good song. What the heck is this video tho, lol?
Good chart. Not following any rhythms too, too closely. Couple minor things. The jump step in M46 and M50 felt a bit unnecessary. just a simple 4th-8th step would have sufficed. The last measure, M55: I think the jumps should have been placed on the last two notes instead of the first two. R-R L-L UD-UD or something like that.
Always Smiling - Okay song.
I'm questioning some of the rhythm choices used in this song. In sections like Measure 6-13, I think some notes could have been left out to keep the focus on the vocals. I don't think the 7 note streams really fit... During the chorus, I'm not sure a long 8th stream was the best way. Maybe something like what you did for M6-13 for the chorus instead? Starting Measure 18, with the jumps like 4th-16th; they go to something that's barely audible. The parts I felt fit the song most were the parts with the 8th-16th-16th-8ths (M2-5, M22-25, 42-50)
Tomorrow - Good song! I like the video. Generally I don't like .lrc files since they distract me, but that can be easily fixed.
Good chart. I guess M51 was weird to sight-read, but not much else to say here.

Also, I still find rolls confusing. How often do you have to step on them?
They are meant to be hit at an 1/8th rate, so essentially consider them a replacement for a long 8th jackhammer. The challenge with these was doing the crossovers while holding the correct arrow and still hitting that roll at a constant rate. Thanks for the review ^.^

Alright, so here's my post for rankings and votes. Let the record show that overall this week was pretty solid, so if your file is low on the list, it's not necessarily because they were "bad", it was simply because there were files of equal quality and it essentially came down to little nitpicks. So without further ado...

"Thank you for releasing me!" |
I recently got into listening to some tracks from SDVX III, and I really wanted to find a 'good' song for this week. So I found Discloze, which is not only a pretty sweet song, but also adds up to exactly 20 points and, since it's 8 letters, could conceivably be played in an actual game of Scrabble (if it was a legal word, that is). So that's gotta be worth bonus points, right? ...Anybody? Well regardless, the song has a couple BPM changes, the first of which is pretty subtle, so watch out for that. The steps themselves are laden with 16ths in some tricky rhythms.
I might actually have one more song coming later. Maybe even later today...

Not necessarily an 8th note...at least once every 0.31 seconds (190-200 BPM 4ths) should a roll be stepped. I believe there's actually a way to configure how long it takes for a roll to be dropped completely on StepMania. Can somebody verify this?

^ I figured Spork! was talking exclusively about his own file, not rolls in general (though I could be wrong).

Idk if there's a way to change just the roll timer from just changing settings, but changing the step timing window changes the roll timer as well.

This. Different BPMs will require a different rate - If you have a song with a slow BPM with rolls, you'll definitely have to go a little bit faster than 8ths, but that's where the fun comes in. Songs like Finale and Vanilla Twilight (a submission I made last year) had rolls which you had to be creative with timing due to speed of them, adding in whatever you have to (gallops, ghost steps) to make them continue holding while going with the beat.Usually I use them to mark noises that are a little more intense than a regular freeze note deserves, but it depends on the step-artist itself and the interpretation by everyone else.
There is definitely a definite value for how much you actually have to hit them to keep them going. I'm not exactly sure about it myself (0.31 or 1/4th rate at 190-200 seems about right, I remember the original rule I heard back in early ITG days was 200 or Afronova speed). All I know is I hate rolls when used as 16th runs, they're far more fun IMO as a replacement for jackhammers.
I'm starting to worry I may not see any points this week. C'est la vie. I have fun playing my file though, and that's what matters.

I have a treat for you in . Read the readme in the ZIP for instructions. They're not complicated... I suppose.
Also, there are hands (intended as brackets), but I did colour-code them. Of course, you are free to play it however you want.
I might submit another if I have time. In the meantime, good luck and have fun!
