So I am looking a possibly getting a DDR arcade cabinet sometime in the future, I have been reading about how you go about booting other mixes on the 573 hardware and how you have to be a member of the "The Usual Places™" to get the modded disc images to work in your cabinet. Would it just be easier to use stepmania instead of trying to become part of a group that not many people are in. I of course would like to use the actual hardware but is it worth all of the trouble?

I have heard that if you go the Stepmania route that the JPAC is laggy and you don't get lights ( i might be able to live without the lights part but not the lag part). Also how reliable is the 573 hardware? The only mixes that I really like and would want to get would be Extreme, 5th, MAX2 (7th) and SuperNova 2 (which I know is a completely different board). I like some of the custom songs on Stepmania but if it is really buggy ( I use it on my laptop and it crashes sometimes) and laggy then of course that is not an option.

Basically I am looking for the pros and cons of both Smile

Thanks in advance Smile

"Yuuki Mishima for Tekken"
Stepmania for convinence, 573 for authenticity. Getting a good theme will pretty much negate anything 573 has over Stepmania.

If you're interested in eventually score attacking then I'd suggest sticking to official mixes (obviously chances are the machine that you buy will come with something, you'd hope one of the ones that you're actually interested in).

If you don't really mind, then Stepmania is a good way to go, it's not particularly difficult to do (depending on the state of the machine when you get it, some machines require a lot more maintenance than others). I personally didn't find too many problems with the JPAC lag-wise, you're going to have to set a global offset for Stepmania for lag into the speakers/monitor/footpanels anyway, and from my experience it tends to be fairly consistent.

Also doesn't have to be one or the other, granted unless you put a bit of time into making an interchangeable setup then the changeover might take a little bit of time, but there's no reason why you can't use both. I used to stick the old 573s back in to the Stepmania cabinets that were in the old arcade I used to frequent for days when I was there and fancied playing on an authentic kit.

Why would you need an official mix for "score attacking"? Official mixes have sync that is all over the place and the frame based timing windows yuck.

StepMania with DDR relative timing windows and a properly synched machine and simfiles (which can be fixed) as well as perfect steps (for those DDR songs that fudged the notes) is a much more reliable method of getting accurate scores. Plus you can get better looking Noteskins and support for HD displays.

I wasn't at all trying to claim that score attacking on official mixes is easier, quite the opposite. Being able to do well on a song on Stepmania, no matter how "accurate" the timing windows are, does not necessarily translate to being able to do well on that same song on an official mix.

Of course, this is just my opinion. Everyone has their own reasons for wanting their own machines, and mine would personally be to attempt to PFC through the games (and fitness) and that is something I wouldn't want to do on Stepmania. Just depends on what dondon wants to do with theirs if/when they get one.

Not to mention scores on the Score Tracker here only count if done on an official mix.

Well the only thing I can think of is that with Stepmania there is no limitation on how many songs you can have, well there is a limitation on the basis of how big your HDD is, as when compared to an official mix you're only stuck with the mix that you have or if you have more than one mix you'd be constantly switching mixes.

I don't mind switching mixes out when I want to play those songs, its what I will probably have to go through to get said mixes. I guess I will cross that bridge when I get to it Tongue

Why not buy a jamma switcher? That's what I use, and it lets me switch from my PC and 573 with the push of a button.

That is an option as well patj, I still want to get my hands on original mixes too, it's like mame for arcade games it's just not the real thing, except for some of the songs that were console exclusives. Does anyone know if the song Heaven by DJ Sammi is on an of the original mixes or was that s console exclusive?

I just got a cable to output video from my PSP to my TV so I can now play all the old DDR PS1 era games including 5th Mix with my dance pads on my TV without the typical emulator lag because my PS1 doesn't do imports. That's as legit to DDR as I ever plan to get, console mixes on consoles are close enough for me.
