I just love how much annoyance this causes for people on the site. It does to me to, and all but you guys do know that you don't have to post or look at it. You can just ignore it, let them say that there leaving, and don't respond, thats all you have to do

That never works. Best solution is to just delete it on sight from now on.

If a n00b creates a goodbye thread after their rating drops to -50, nobody is going to care if they leave. However, if someone well liked decides to quit the forums, I'd understand that. Thus, it would be arbitrary to say who can and can't do that.

Well if someone well liked on the forums still decided to make a goodbye thread, it would still be pointless and annoying. If they just left without saying anything, it's not like that many people would notice anyway.

No matter who you are and how well liked you have been on a forum, goodbye threads are ALWAYS stupid. It's not like your leaving your own country or city or whatever. It's the damn internet.

Thats right and if people want ratings going up, well they have to A, Post important things, and B, Read the tips before you post. Lets see who got the idea?

Just sharing my 2 cents of opinion.

Sometimes some old members has changes in their lives and cannot show up for a long time, thus making them wanting to say a good bye (See you all) thread. Does that contribute to making a good bye thread?

I just think that if someone is already saying good bye just because they think they are not liked by everyone, they don't really need to be banned since they are not going to show up again anyway. Just lock / close the thread and let their rating go down in flames.
(Deleting them will not get their rating to negative infinity! )

Yes it does, unless its a go away to a trip thing.

If some one that is well-liked and is a regular here, they would know better than to create a "Goodbye" thread.
If something happened where I wouldn't be on the site for a long while, I'd simply send a PM to some of the regulars explaining the situation. That way when someone asks, one of the regulars will simply state in a post.

Well, that's me. I certainly wouldn't cog up the forums with another "Goodbye" thread, that's for sure.

If I ever get banned, I wouldn't care. I would just quit.

Well, either way, I just think both are pointless - saying good byes by regulars and haters.
If they want to leave, just leave.
But banning them because of the thread seems a little unnecessary and harsh. All we have to do is close it or delete it.
If they come back to throw a fit about why is the thread gone/closed, then it is ban-able.

Oh, so would I.
Unless I think I really didn't do anything wrong at all. Then I would just ask the one who banned me nicely what did I do wrong. We are all grown-ups here.

Just out of curiosity, why do people care about their ratings so much anyway?
It flunctuates all the time just like the stock market.

Not everybody here is a grown-up. The ones that care so much about their ratings are usually the ones that are still young.

A "Goodbye, I'm going to the lake for a month and won't be able to post" thread is just fine in my view.
It's only the "I'm leaving unless you all rate me higher" threads that make a person look immature.

The only thing user ratings might matter is when you are applying to be a mod. But since al2k4
can handle stuff here on his own, it isn't very important for now.

But if al2k4 starts the mod applications, I wouldn't think that user ratings will matter at all.
(Which reminds me, will I get accepted as a mod in "another website').

But on the whole, I don't really care about them much since I'm not one who spends a lot of
time on forums.

And for those goodbyes, they really don't need to say that they'll be gone. Just disappear
quietly. It's only acceptable on those "you'll be gone since you'll be going somewhere and need some help" (that's a mouthful) like the "I'm going to a lake" thread.
