Must, resist, urge, to flame, ITG fanboyism...

Anyways, I'm just about 29 and I have no intentions of quitting. I have a wife and a 7 month old child and I work 40 hours a week. I find time to spend with the wife, hang with friends and still play DDR or PIU roughly 3 to 6 hours a week (not mention making simfiles and edits). My life is busy but I make the most of my day. I don't require 4 hours of TV time at the end of every day so I have plenty of free time to do other things.

Diaz makes a great point. People do what they make time to do. I've fought the stigma that video gaming has on our generation. Not everyone says nice things, but fuck them. I refuse to become sedetary like other people I see around me. If people can spend their time going to sporting events, what's so wrong with what we do?

We are core gamers and we're here because we have a love for what we do. It'll live as long we continue to love what we do. I can't stand what mainstream society calls entertainment, but don't come bashing me for what I do. Live and let live.

There's nothing necessarily wrong with playing dancing games. It just has the social stigma of being "that gay flailing arm game that all the Asians play." It always has. Despite both Konami and Roxor's best attempts to Westernize the genre, it never really outgrew that reputation. Even when DDR and ITG reached mainstream success, most people I knew just didn't care. Regardless of your preference between ITG and DDR, I think we can both agree that dancing games always have been and always will be a niche thing, and that the latest Tebow/Jeremy Lin/Kobe Bryant etc news will always be infinitely more important to the Average Joe than AAA'ing Max 300.

also yeah, not old, just sharing my thoughts

Point taken! I just wish there wasn't that stigma that surrounded anything other than super mario brothers. Even among other gamers we're outcasted. We can't win for anything!! I guess this is why I love hardcore music games. It's not for everyone.

Funny because back before COD took over the gaming world, music rhythm gaming was pretty much the hottest thing out there, Guitar Hero battling Rock Band while Konami's music rhythm games were trying to be in par with them but it never really reached that point. At that time playing music rhythm games weren't even thought of being "lol stupid guy playing plastic instrument", far from it.

And now COD came in and said "Hey we've got guns, explosions, and you don't need intricate equipment for it, just your regular ol' console controller to make you think you're actually shooting and calling in air bombs like the pro's" and it pretty much dumb-fucked the world into it's Michael Bay-ism world. Where is music rhythm gaming now?

Nowhere. Guitar Hero (and any other Hero game) is in a bit of a standstill until Activision realizes just what in the hell they can do with it, Rock Band's now the king of "band-centered" music rhythm game, as well as the king of "dance" game (Dance Central), Ubisoft makes a game that can be done by simply standing there (proved it myself) unless you want to go pro and play it on the Kinect (Just Dance series), aaaaaaaaaaaaaand Konami actually makes a piece of gold and most of the fans reject it because of a few master licenses OR there just isn't enough "Japanese" songs in it.

Sorry for straying this off-topic, but just wanted to let that out seeing the conversation above was following into that direction.

Anyway, what about this one freestyle DDR guy? He may not be the BEST player but, he's done some pretty damn good freestyle DDR videos on Youtube and possibly NicoNicoDouga

I forgot his name but he had like A LOT of DDR freestyle videos and i think he was in his...late 30's/40's?

It doesn't help that nearly every media portrayal of DDR involves a chance for a date to "show their dance skills" and some how the game magically scores you based on full body movement. If they actually treat DDR how it's actually played, it wouldn't look half bad, but nah, they still try to pass DDR as a real dance simulation game.

As for the topic, I'm 26, and 3 of the local regulars are between 25 and 28. The other dozen or so regulars range from 18 to 22. I think it's mostly a matter of most people moving on with their lives, and not sticking with the same activity for more than a couple years.

Seriously? I can't objectively be against ITG fanboyism and DDR fanboyism without you being an ass about it?

I can't even say I was objectively against DDR until supernova came out, and I was like "what the hell is this shit!!"

I wouldn't be objectively against DDR if konami gave the series half the attention IIDX got! I still think they need vision and a sense of realization that they shouldn't stick to certain genre's of music. Be inventive with the GUI and give the end user more control. Also, getting rid of that X scale would be great too. Hire some new people to write their note charts. I'm still staring at the same old note charts that I've been staring at since 2nd mix.

There is so much wrong that could be righted if they actually cared.

These are most of the reasons why there aren't many long time players. It's rare enough to come across someone that's been playing as long as I have, much less my age range. It's a sad state of affairs unless you're one of those people that happen to own your own machine. I promise to join that crowd soon enough.

I don't know, I actually enjoyed SuperNOVA, SuperNOVA 2 and DDR X2. I find enough variety in the various mixes that have been released. Plus, I'm seeing some charting styles I've never seen before on doubles play for X2 that I find incredibly fun.

I think Konami pays as much attention to DDR as they do beatmania, we just don't necessarily see it since we lack eAmuse. I also think they do care at least some what, they redesigned their X pads for X2 and they're substantially better (still broken but still better) than the X pads. They even brought out bemanistyle players to test their newly designed X2 pads. They brought out members of the community to test a sync patch for X in Europe (I think al was a part of that group, I could be wrong). Honestly, the only thing I find missing from DDR post-SuperNOVA is Dancemania licenses.

DDR ultimately failed in America because of the inability of Konami/Betson to put a (literally) playable product in arcades, not because it lacked the OMG AWESOME features that only Stepmania players seem to care so much about (well, arcades dying is a pretty big factor too). I don't know why, but ITG-Customs players hate to admit that they are nothing more than glorified stepmania players who can't even play double. Seriously, for being such a "hardcore bunch" it's rather sad to see them claim that "the whole game is done" (the actual ITG official songs) yet Double is almost completely ignored. That's why not even re-branding the game as PIU didn't do any good for the franchise. Sure, PIU is hardcore, but it's DOUBLE hardcore, not "single-hardcore-crossovers-suck".

It's like Mugen players (you know, the "stepmania of fighting games") trying to put down commercial-fighting-games players just because they think they are god's gift to humanity. Fuck YOU, play a real game. Thank you.
