My files got stolen by this guy.
Just because you make your own steps and remove the "DDR Mania Mix" tag from the album part of the MP3 doesn't mean it's your file.
He stole:

Look at the OFFSET and SAMPLESTARTS. Also, I believe he stole my music cuts too. I'm sick of the bullshit. Learn to make your own goddamn files, people.
Can I be a simfile mod and can he be warned or something?

And I was just thinking to myself when he asked for a category that we now have a lot of japanese friends.
I leave everything up to you.
EDIT: Oh, you locked your category. I wanted to do comparisons.

Sorry, I am not good at English.
So I use this sentence translation site.
I've sent a warning to him about this matter in Japanese.

Wait, so he used your music cut and your samplestart/offset and it's stealing the entire file? I'm guilty of creating my own version of someone else's simfile and just using the music and the sync settings (if they're fine) and recreating the graphics and steps. Is this considered "stealing" someone's file?

I'm going to have to say that I'm guilty of making a Xepher Edit with the same music cut, audio file, offset, and music preview from Zenius-I-Vanisher.com.

I'd say that's more like an edit, but not a simfile, or who knows. I usually get mp3 from youtube and start from there.

Yeah, I used to do this too before finding out about Audacity. Where exactly is the line that crosses into stealing? Granted, using the same sample might be going a bit far if there's another decent part of the song to use (and using the same song cut probably is), but if he changes most (if not all) of the other stuff, would that not differ enough?

I think it's probably a good idea to use someone else's files as a basis for learning how to make your own files.
On the other hand, if someone used my music cut, I'd be as upset as I would be if someone stole my steps.

Yes. It really isn't that hard to cut a song and find the offsets/etc. If you can't cut songs you can always just ask someone else. Really, it's so fucking simple and there are some dumb people out there who think that they can just waltz right in and be like "well they didn't work hard on this at all so it's fine if I take it." But really that's not the thing, I actually put a lot of effort into my simfiles for people to play but that doesn't mean you can just take it. I would have been fine with it if he had asked me but nope. He just took it.Quote: Aegis

Yeah, I'm not sure this is stealing. I'd say a good amount of simfiles use offsets and BPM settings that were configured by someone other than the uploader, like when people make edits of offical DDR songs.
In my book, having the same steps is where it counts as outright stealing. I also think it's okay to use someone elses graphics if you give the creator proper credit. Offsets and song cuts though? I just don't know.

Well, in his defense, some people (i.e., ME) don't have this "simple" know-how of how to cut songs decently. I don't like to inconvenience someone and ask them to trim a song for me because I'm too dense to do it myself, so I usually just skip cutting a song and step the whole damn thing.
But yeah, if he didn't actually ask you beforehand, that's kind of a dick move.

That's different, that's official data not made by someone who does this as a hobby and who basically tries really hard to make quality simfiles.Quote: -Viper-

They never even asked me permission, so I can be mad that it's my data they're stealing.Quote: Zukin-Man

Ok, well it really doesn't hurt to ask. If he would have asked I would have been like "ok if you give me credit" but none of that happened. It's really frustrating because I worked really hard on files and then there's someone who just decides that I can make my own steps for it and it'll be my own simfile but really it's not because technically it's still mine. I'm the person that worked hard to sync it and find a good samplestart/etc. and then they just erase my name and then don't even care that it was my work. But yeah, if he didn't actually ask you beforehand, that's kind of a dick move.

Music cuts are important :{
I spent over 3 hours on the music cut for Club Can't Handle Me, and a serious ammount of time on some of the songs in Chewi's pack. I think Scream took a few hours, and Poker Face was almost a remix.
Maybe not everyone puts as much effort into their music cuts, but it's a lot of work, makes a difference to the gameplay of the song, and makes as big of an impact on presentation as the banner/background.
If he'd used some of the Skymix songs I'd worked on, I don't know if I'd make a thread about it, but I'd probably be kind of upset, and MSNing people, trying to figure out what I should do about it.
