I understand copyright but on a totally NON-PROFIT site
Nice argument, but your premise is wrong. Youtube is not a non-profit site. Sure, you don't profit from uploading, and I don't, but look at the site for once. See all those ads? Yep, Google profits from everything you and I upload.
In addition, whether a site is for profit or non-profit has no bearing on copyright law.

I was referring to us as users. WE aren't making any money from our uploads, at least I'm not. Everything I upload is to share for fun. Perhaps I'm not exactly me-tubing, but the stuff I upload generally has a lot of input from me and isn't a straight copy of something. I think there is a difference between uploading a whole song and using part of a song creatively for FUN. Believe me I know this doesn't matter in the legal world but I don't feel like I'm hurting anyone.

Google profit but they obviously paid WMG money for use of their music which they were fine with before they demanded more money and Youtube refused.

Welsh singer Duffy has personally stated that she doesn't care too much about illegal downloads because she thinks it's mostly done by people who cannot afford to buy a lot of music. I also think as an artist she probably cares more about the idea of lots of people being exposed to her music than how they are getting it. She's in it for the music and NOT for the money, I doubt her record company would agree though...

Uhm, but I'm sure if she stopped getting paid she'd have an up roar about it. She has bills to pay. And to say that illegal downloading is done mostly by people who can't afford to buy a lot of music is a joke. It's a privilege, you don't HAVE to have music. There's always the radio. There's a TON of free internet radio sites. There's a TON of artists who put their music out for free as it is. If you download music illegally, it's stealing, plain and simple. Downloading simfiles of official DDR songs for Stepmania is stealing, shocking, but true. But I have a clear conscience with it because Konami could file suit but they haven't and they won't because it's beneficial for them as it's free exposure and if anything, it's made DDR MORE popular.

Please don't be so silly, my reference to Duffy was brief so I didn't quote her word for word. Basically as I said she doesn't care AS MUCH about illegal downloads of her music because in her view it was done by those who cannot afford her music. As I said this was meant to be HER belief, not mine.

That said people download music all the time and it hasn't destroyed the industry. People will pay for music, people will illegally download it and the record companies will make millions and the artists a small percentage of that. It really doesn't help the RC's build consumer confidence by acting like complete dicks over a bit of extra cash from a site which basically gives them free advertisement and lately links to iTunes where copies of their songs can be downloaded.
