Consoles are just custom-built computers, and when a computer gets into its fifth year with no upgrades it's hard to call it a gaming machine.

I think that having a closed system is good though, it keeps things simple and you don't have to look at a new game and wonder if it'll run or not. But the life cycle of consoles needs to be more frequent than it is. The iDevice became the king of portable gaming almost overnight. I wonder how much of that had to do with the hardware improving every year instead of every half-decade?

Considering pretty much any picture on Danbooru that has "that" on it pretty much automatically gets rated Explicit, I kinda think differently.

I have to agree with AeronPeryton's first point on his second paragraph. Consoles do offer the convenience of being able to play new games without the worry of how the game will run and on what settings. Though I must admit PC gaming is much more visually rewarding when you have the cash to dish out for a bleeding-edge gaming computer.

However having things TOO simplified plus releasing a newer product more frequently does not go well with me. In fact, those are some of the reasons I'm not terribly fond of Apple (besides the reason they rely almost completely on their brand name), to put it very lightly. I like being able to choose. I don't like it when things are dumbed down. I also like it when the product is released in a full due process, not some idea that later becomes a lame recollection.

Just because there's ice cream on the menu doesn't mean you're required to order dessert. In the same way, a product that gets updated every year doesn't have to be purchased every year. It's a choice that otherwise doesn't exist in the gaming market.

You don't have to like Apple to appreciate the success of the model they have in play (and it's not even devoted to games). And I'd love to see you back up the comment on brand reliance... if for no other reason than I just got done reading that RIM froze their stock pending "professional internal review" of the company. A brand doesn't save you in this economy.

Apple junk sells like hotcakes because they're pros at making gaming look cheap or something. I think of Apple games, I think of games college kids made in their basement and threw onto the market... and for some reason jubeat. Just because everyone's playing it doesn't make it more appealing.

And I just don't like Apple... they have so much money that they don't need any of mine. Surely, I could be roped into their games if I wanted to, but I don't really don't care enough. I like consoles because they already make games I like. And if they don't, I don't have to buy that many games. I think multiplayer is more fun set up on a big screen than it is crammed onto tiny little ones. Although it really depends on the game at the same time.

Personally, I'm glad the Wii is on its, what, sixth year? Don't have to get a new system for Mario Party 9, w00t.
