Just like the first game, the story in this one is not very clear.
I'd like to know other people's take on it.
My interpretation is that Nico's (the white cat) mother died and Nico decided to "stay with her", that is, stay with her dead body.
Being a young kitten, the mother, now just a spirit, knows he won't survive so she guides Nico in his dreams to meet other individuals in their dreams as well.
Nico meets brother and sister, El and Al, the robot, Macoto, and the pelican, Pata (he is still inside an egg).
Through them, Nico learns what life is about, by joining them in various "dream adventures".
In the end, they all are presented with a train station. This station has a piano somewhere inside it. Here is where Nico and his dead mom are.
The 4 individuals (the kids, the robot and the pelican), after "waking up", search the place in their dreams. Here, all 4 of them arrive at the same time and play a special tune they heard throughout their dream (most likely, a tune created by Nico's mom) in the piano.
Nico comes from under the piano after recognizing the tune and sees the familiar faces.
It's at this moment, I think, when Nico finally ends up realizing what his mother tried to tell him in his dream: to let go of the past (let go of her, since she is dead now) and to go on living his life.
The last thing we see is the empty lobby with the spirit of the mom on the piano, suggesting that Nico chose to leave the station and move on.
I don't know if my interpretation is correct or if it's even close to what it actually meant.
I'm not fond of "interpret the story yourself" narratives since I never have a confirmation on what the story actually means.
But like I said, if someone has another interpretation, or better yet, an actual explanation from whoever at Konami wrote it, please, let me know.
