This is what pops up after it's done downloading. When I click "open", it quickly opens and closes a small blank window. No matter how many times I click it, nothing happens. Clicking "save" doesn't work either.
Do you have another browser? If so, try downloading with another browser. Just downloaded the 4:3 here without any issue (with Firefox and DTA extension) o__O

Out of curiosity, where do your downloads get saved to? I wonder if the rar file is in fact being successfully uncompressed and the resulting directory is just sitting somewhere on your computer...
Also, what happens with other rar files when you download and uncompress them?
Also also, What software do you use to uncompress your rar files?

Unless setted manually, my downloads go to my Downloads folder.
And other rar files usually work.
And what do you mean by what software?

Do you use software like 7zip or winrar or something like that?
I actually recommend 7zip for Windows: http://www.7-zip.org/
It's free, handles a ton of different compression types, and installs a(n optional) convenient "compress this directory" shortcut to your right-click menu. It might even solve the problem of the x2-theme-rar-that-mysteriously-won't-open...

I didn't know there's a software for this. Well, I'll give it a try.
YES IT WORKS! Thank you so much dbk2! Just one more thing, how do you reduce the banner size?

Glad to hear that 7-zip worked out for you. You can repay me by helping some other forum-goer when s/he inevitably asks the same question.
Regarding banner sizes:
Short answer: I don't know.
Long answer: I don't use this particular theme for SM5, myself, and I even if I did, I probably still wouldn't know. Heh. Stepmania is interesting like that. Since the themes and the program itself are both open-source, we'd all ideally be able to go through the code ourselves and answer our own questions + fix our own problems when they arose.
Unfortunately, Stepmania theming is a rather arcane, largely undocumented sort ofmagic science. From the little I understand, Stepmania programming is harder.
I know the lack-of-documentation is being actively worked on by people like djpholy and others, and, under their guidance, I'm trying to get involved myself. As an open-source project, Stepmania is very much what we, the community that uses it, make of it.
So what can we do? Hmm.
1. Send the current developers emails/messages/PMs of thanks for their efforts up to this point. The list of developers is here, though not everyone listed there is necessarily active on the project any longer (Chris Danford, for example).
2. Read the Stepmania 5 Wiki. If you use Stepmania, you should at least glance over what topics are available in the wiki.
3.Gently prod silverdragon754 to send djpohly more layer-aware art/graphic files for the Starlight theme.
4. Don't be afraid to ask questions when you have them, but be prepared to explain your question to the best of your ability.

Well I appreciate the help you've given me. At least I got the theme working. And sure! I'll be more than glad to help people if they have the same problem I had. And the banner thing, I know someone out there knows how to fix it because I saw a video where the banners look normal.

There is actually a website where you can re-size your images, but you have to make sure that image is larger than what size you want it to be since the image would look blurry at a higher resolution.
If you would like to re-size your banner, simply follow this link and follow the instructions:
http://www.picresize.com/results
You can also customize the size if you need to be more exact.

I'm having a lot of trouble installing this theme. First of all, I'm using SM5 alpha 1 on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4.
I downloaded the 16:9 theme and uncompressed the .rar file with Zipeg (http://www.zipeg.com/), placed it in my Themes folder, and now my Stepmania won't open because it says "No Noteskins Found." Any help?

Hmm. It took some tinkering, but I was finally able to recreate the error you're getting by deleting my entire Noteskins directory within my Stepmania install directory.
Out of curiosity, where did you get SM5 alpha1 for Mac OS? You should consider downloading a newer build (currently alpha3) from here: http://code.google.com/p/sm-ssc/downloads/list
I know, at least, that SM5 alpha3 comes with noteskins (although they are "bundled" inside:
[Your Stepmania Install directory]/Packages/GameData.smzip
I believe alpha1 came with noteskins, too, but I have no real means of testing that.
Anyway, there is always the Stepmania Wiki which has a page that might help you. Yes, I'm consciously choosing to link you to the entire wiki (rather than the specific page you're looking for). Let us know how it goes!

BTW, ALL versions of Stepmania come with pre-installed noteskins by default, otherwise the game wouldn't run properly at startup, and just like dbk2 said, you may have deleted your noteskins folder by accident. Any easy way to solve this is to reinstall Stepmania, but don't worry, it won't get rid of your music files, and stuff you saved personally, but any edits to the main themes and main files however will be replaced so keep a backup just in case if you need it, then you should have all the noteskins restored, and you can keep playing again.

Is there a way to turn off the toasty in the theme? It's starting to creep me out.
I know there's a thread here but it's for adding a toasty. I am currently looking for it in the metrics. Can anyone help me please?

You need to find preferences.ini.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Make sure that you have install stepmania on your main hard drive, but NOT in program files (Only has problems with Vista/7).
2. Once completely installed, go to the start menu and go to all programs.
3. Find the Stepmania 5 folder and open the Settings folder.
4. Go into the SAVE folder, and open up preferences.ini.
5. In preferences.ini, find the line that says eastereggs=1. Change 1 to 0.
The Eastereggs line is what triggers a toasty after a certain # of combos (usually 250).
Also, I have an issue I would like to address.
On the Event Mode/1st, etc. stage screen which should show the jacket again, your theme thinks that the banner of the song is the jacket.
Jacket work fine on song selection, but once you select a song, it shows the banner before you play. Help please?

So, I'm using this theme on my machine, and the arcade options navigation (unless I am missing something) is a bit wonky. Since you press enter to proceed, once I hit the acceleration options all I can really do is toggle Boost or whatever off and on again forever, and never go further down into the list. I can get around it by going back to the beginning (holding the two arrows and pressing start) and up around to Exit, but is there any way to configure this to work the way it should?

There seems to be another problem with a graphic on Alpha 1.
If the image doesn't appear, this is my first time trying to upload a pic... I may need help getting it to show properly...
The Score frame below the difficulty display doesn't appear.... how do I get this to appear?

I assumed that this was some kind of choice of the theme creator, since banners were always used previously, as a way to still incorporate them? I'd personally prefer it if it just showed the jacket there and maybe fall back on the banner if necessary.
Also, I'll assume that the creator is aware of the fact that certain elements, such as the score, gets stretched in the 16:9 version?

How I solve that? thanks!
