It's not too surprising. Either most of the cabs have either gone to scrap or they have gone to private owners as all the arcades in the past 10-odd years or so have shut down and placed all their machines on auction.

yeah don't be too surprised if you happen to find the cabs on eBay. Right now there is currently 8 machines on eBay.

There's an arcade vendor that has decently upkept several Extremes, ITG2s, and a pump within my area, some as long as 10 years. I've communicated with them via phone and in person; they have been concerned about the reliability of the hardware, and I've run into freezing issues with the Extremes before. I'd like to believe it's a CD issue since it happens when it loads songs.

There used to be one at a movie theater back in 2006 very close to where I live now, but it was removed on my next visit. The theater must have purchased it independently while being thrifty on service for it to go that quick.

There is only an SN1 near me now which has been kept in very good shape. There used to be a DDRX but the player 2 pad's down arrow got busted so they got rid of it as the maintenance most likely was not kept up. It's a shame too because they are building all these bowling alleys near me for some reason but they rather add a bar instead of an arcade; more profitable to have a bar I guess Cry

I do appreciate what I have (Trust me, X2 is a blessing in my head) but I still can’t help but be saddened that it’s likely I will never get the chance to play 2014 unless my dad actually lets his fifteen-year-old son get a four hour train ride down to Astro City for a lock-in… which has since been forced to downgrade to X3 anyway.

If the machine was forced to Downgrade to X3 then it was never a DDR 2014 machine to begin with.

This city has literally no DDR machines left. We had a minor revival in December 2013 when they put a SuperNOVA in the main shopping place, but that got screen burn by March, and was gone by September.

Yup, for a small bit of the last year, a screenburnt cab from 2006 was the most advanced machine we had in ten years. Now all have gone.

I used to see Machines everywhere. Lately just Extremes in Sacramento, but when I go to SF I can play X or X2.

Okay it looks like no one has explained why all of the DDR machines in the U.S.A. are disappearing so I will step in with a very throughout explanation...

Reason 1 - Yes they are breaking down...
Primarily the versions disappearing the fastest are DDR SuperNOVA and DDR SuperNOVA 2. Why? Well simply put the logics (computers) are of a very frail design. The logic consist quite literally of a old style PlayStation 2 with a custom HDD and a Input/Output board all meshed together. Its not uncommon now for those PlayStation 2 to frag its DVD-ROM components just from normal use (yes it still uses a DVD disc to control the game program). Old school 573 logics (used in Extreme and older) are going the way of the dinosaur as well but they are a little more reliable. However they have problems with their flash memory chips from failing (causing issues like not being able to retain high scores or unlock codes).

If not the logic failing, common problems like the CRT monitors are failing, and fixing or replacing a compatible CRT is anything but cheap. Not to mention support for the CRTs from that era is minimal at best. If not the monitor, most DDR machines are failing because their operators have little to no care or knowledge on maintaining the dance platform. A good cabinet typically has its dance platform serviced once a month. This is a miracle to see any public machine follow such a protocol.

Reason 2 - Yes they are terrible revenue earners...
In comparison to most games on the market, dance games are miserable to make money. This is because most games are either redemption or merchandisers and have quick to play action, allowing more credits to be loaded in a day. Even a constantly busy DDR machine will never match the likes of most other games because it typically can be played for about 10 minutes successfully, whereas most racing games and rail shooter games (the two most common genres of arcade video games) take no more than 5 minutes (if not 2). Finally most rhythm games is relatively more difficult to learn than Racing Games (you drive a car with no consequences for reckless driving) or Rail Shooters (you shoot anything that moves), those game require far less eye-movement concentration versus the systematic game play rhythm games play. In today's day and age impulse play favors easy one-step action games like those found on smartphones and the arcade market now follows that trend.

Now why is DDR popular in Japan? Well Japan has no redemption/ticket games! Their laws consider them gambling devices. Even then, type of games like medal games (a.k.a. coin rollers without ticket payouts), cranes, and merchandisers are far more popular than the video game market there today. However arcade video games there are more popular than here and that market is making a comeback with implementing universal systems like PASELI.

Reason 3 - They are getting scooped up by private owners...
Its no secret that Konami has no intention to ever re-release a DDR game in North America ever again. Considering the fact that machines are breaking down if left un-cared for in the public or not earning enough, arcade operators are starting to sell these units off (if not tear them down and sell parts). The principal buyers for DDR machines now is the private collector, but for the select few of us, it is still fun to play. This is why DDR will survive in the hardcore community, but it also sucks because many players are losing the chance more and more to play DDR, ITG, Pump It Up, and any other rhythm game.

However... HOPE IS NOT LOST!
There is a new trend in the North American arcade industry, well not new, but it is my observation its growing a lot lately. New arcades (both locally-owned and commercial operated) are now using the concepts of "pay to get in and play all day" or heavily implementing time play marketing. One of my favorite local spots is "Boss Stage Arcade" in Northglenn, Colorado. They have 2 DDR machines which get played... ALOT! I look forward to seeing how this arcade marketing concept grows and if successful I expect to see a new re-birth of arcade video games and maybe, just maybe, games like DDR will come new again.

I hope this comes down to florida.
Disney Quest here in Orlando Florida is already like that but the machines suck.

yea the problem itself is the maintenance as not easy also to maintain the machine all the time .. not to mention if there is frequent tournament then that way it would worth way more to maintain them.

Locally we used to have a few ddr machines, and an ITG cab, but as of recently we really only have a SuperNova. When I bought my Max 2 machine, I talked to the owner of the arcade about why he was getting rid of it, and he told me that any game that are non-redemption games just don't make money for them anymore. Kids have xboxs and playstations if they want to play games, what they really want out of arcade visits is the chance to win toys. Therefore, I think a lot of the machines in the US are being sold to private owners, or are out in storage units somewhere.

Most have probably been bought and converted to ITG or scrapped.

Upkeep on these is very expensive. Not many arcades can afford it.

When I lived in Huntington, West Virginia years ago, they were 2 DDR Extreme machines nearby. One was at a Tilt location at a nearby mall and one was in Ashland, KY at this family fun center called Gattiland. Both machines left during 2011 and 2005 respectively.

GattiLand's Extreme cabinet actually wasn't removed until October 2012 -- it ran ITG most of the time I visited. That cabinet was relocated somewhere in West Virginia. Anyone interested in learning more about that machine and its whereabouts can PM me.

The Extreme at Huntington Mall's Tilt wasn't removed until like a few years ago (maybe late 2012 or 2013) when the arcade removed all the machines for renovation, then was replaced by another store. It had the worst pads I've ever played.

I know from my annual visits to Myrtle Beach that most locations I visited there have lost dance games. I've visited a number of other locations that used to have dance games, but no longer do. A guy once described Dance Dance Revolution as dinosaur or something like that, so I guess a lot of people don't care about it as much as we do.

It seems as if a lot of private owners are willing to let others come play, so maybe we should work to get private machines in various locations, so no one is deprived...

Actually, we've gotten a few more DDR machines in my area. We went from 0 in 2008 to 3 today. I think it sorta depends on where you live. However, 2 of the machines near me are not worth the scrap from which they are made. Still, the first one we got is really great.
