Change your config to the default theme, go to options>appearance options>set bg fit mode and adjust it to your personal preferences. When you have done, change again the theme. This is because some themes doesn't include this setting.

Are you using any non-widescreen dimension with any widescreen aspect ratio during fullscreen (e.g. 800x600 pixel resolution, 16/9 AR)?

It happened to me years ago before but I'm sure neither of Madkat's instruction worked. What I do is to change your desktop graphic properties' scale setting to "scale to fullscreen". In my case where my video card is AMD Radeon HD, available scale settings are "Center", "Scale to Full Screen" and "Maintain Aspect Ratio". The last one may have forced your SM display to have black borders, assuming you are using those settings I mentioned in my previous question.

So, how it is then?
Setting it to "scale to fullscreen" should get rid of black side borders in StepMania.

Sounds like "scale to fullscreen" will stretch it and make everything look wrong.
Do what Madkat said, set your game resolution to 1280x800 and aspect ratio to 16:10.
That way, the game matches the aspect ratio of your screen.

If he is fine setting his SM resolution to 1280x800 in his SM, then go for it. Based from his pic:
https://gyazo.com/7167ccbb4a0f81621ab6ea350b55f87b
He used a non-widescreen SM resolution and widescreen AR so I assume he prefer to stay that way. Since he's using an on-board graphics (Intel), it's not advisable to set higher than 800x600 otherwise, performance is not good in SM5.

The key here is to give Stepmania the same aspect ratio as the screen.
If the game has a different aspect ratio, then there will be black bars.
If the video driver is configured (wrongly) to force stretch the game to fill the screen, then it'll look wrong because the aspect ratio is wrong.

@omglonghair What is your usual SM display resolution do you use?
Post #13 · Publicado en 2015-09-04 01:48:13am Hace 8.7 años
ok i switched it to 1280x800 and 6:10 ratio and it stretched it now!
but like razorblade said the performance kinda suffers a bit (which isnt a dealbreaker haha)
but would it be fine to lower it a bit or i have to keep it like that to stretch?
before it was 1024x768

The higher the resolution, your video card will be hotter. I set mine to 800x600 reso, 16:9 AR both for window and fullscreen mode (I set my video card scaling mode to "scale to fullscreen" so there is no black left and right bars). The quality and performance for that isn't bad. My current desktop resolution is 1366x768 and I'm using Intel HD video card.
You might try setting yours to 800x600 or 1024x768, and 16:10 AR.

You can lower the resolution without causing problems, but the aspect ratio needs to be 16:10, and the resolution you pick needs to be a 16:10 aspect ratio, or it'll look stretched weird.
You could try manually editing your Preferences.ini to make it use 800x450 like this:
DisplayAspectRatio=1.600000
DisplayHeight=450
DisplayWidth=800

@Kyzentun Does it mean, any resolution input other than specified few in pref.ini won't switch to 320x240 now?

Fullscreen is probably forced to be a resolution on the list of what your monitor supports. Windowed mode works with whatever you put in.
Some laptops with nvidia cards only report the native resolution of the screen and nothing else.
