Ok so it's officially, I will be attempting to break the current official world record of 14 hours 22 minutes 17 seconds on the 19th of November. I tied this with a charity drive where I'll donate $1 for every game I complete. For those interested in how it works, here's the rules:
Rules:
-I must start on the lowest setting (Beginner) and play at each level for 5 hours. Once I hit the 25th hour, every chart must be the highest one available (if it's a challenge chart, gotta be challenge, otherwise it's expert).
-I get a 10 minute break for every full hour I complete that I can pull for later.
-If I fail a song, it's over, even on Extra Stage
-I have 20 seconds to make any input (select music, options etc).
Details:
I will be doing this on a modded X2 (sensors modded) machine. I will be happy to break the "official" record, but some people will no doubt point at the 36 hour and 30 minute record "unofficially" set back in 03 I think (maybe it was 06?). Either way, I'll also attempt to SET the record to 40 hours. If I can hit that hour, I'm calling it quits (plus I can't afford to donate that much more lol).
I will be recording the entire thing on a webcam, but I won't be streaming it (no internet connection). I will not be paying for the games (the arcade ok'd it, Event Mode is one). I'm doing this with conjunction of the arcade along with local media sources. This is completely legit and is going to kick ass.
I will be starting at 5 am Saturday morning (I'll hit the 20th hour at the turn of midnight, 20, November, yes, you see what I did there) and hopefully finish by 9PM Sunday night.

Let me be the first to wish you the best of luck in this record attempt! I hope it all goes quite well. Is this just for the prosperity of the record-holding, or is there charity involved?

We (Zuma Fun Center and I) are raising money for Second Harvest Food bank. Basically, for ever $1 someone donates, they can feed 3 people and I'll be donating $1 for every game I complete during the attempt.

(Also, holy crap, you got me to stop lurking.)

>A big congratulations goes out to Chris McGivern who broke the record yesterday at Las Vegas. He ended his attempt at a staggering time of 20 hours, 24 minutes and 43 seconds.
>Hi! I've been in contact with Guinness and they're excited to hear about my attempt! They've sent me official witness statements for your staff to sign if that's OK... I'll bring them along tomorrow

A few details and things I learned yesterday.
First, 20 seconds is NOT long enough to make a song selection. I need to know what song I'm going to do well in advance. No time for moving through list at all. I may have a premade list of songs I'll choose in order to prevent losing this attempt due to a technicality such as taking 21 seconds to select a song.
Second, I realize my original strategy of barely moving may not work. It causes the muscles above my knees to become stiff and uncomfortable rather quickly. My original play style was going to be to simply bracket the game at Expert/Challenge. That may work against me.
Third, I'm learning there's quite a few songs I can pass on Challenge (up to 13s even) by doing "just enough" to survive. I kind of want to stay away from shock arrow charts as they may really screw me up at the hour I'll be doing them. Luckily, I have the Max 2 remix songs to add to my list.
Fourth, I found out that your breaks do not count against your total record time, i.e. if I play 2.5 hours and have 15 minutes of break time in there, I'm still at 2.5 hours. So yes, I can play for 6 hours, take a 1hour break and get back to it for 7 hours.

wait, so the loading time it takes from stage to song is included in the 20 seconds?

No, basically anywhere there's a timer, I have 20 seconds to make an input.
->SELECT MODE - 20 Seconds
->SELECT STYLE - 20 Seconds
->SELECT MUSIC - 20 Seconds
->SELECT OPTIONS - 20 Seconds
etc.

Wait, 13s and Shock Arrow charts? Are you going to be doing this on the X2 machine now? (If so, hope those sensors stay usable the whole 40 hours =P)
And wow, 20 seconds per song. That's going to be hard to keep up...just scrolling through the list can take that long if you aren't careful. I'm guessing there's not a rule that says you have to do every song in the game though, right?

Yeah the X2 sensors have been modded and have been perfect for a month now. So we'll see how they hold up. And there's no rule about playing every song. Any song (even the same song) is valid.

That's what they're telling me here, that I should pretty much clean up on the high scores for beginner through difficult.
