If you didn't read it when Beta 3 was released, dbk2 had upgrade instructions. (he covers stuff like moving all themes and songs to %APPDATA%/StepMania 5.0/)
Themers should take special note of the Docs/Themerdocs/Examples/ folder, which has a few new examples of things in it.
Linux users still have to build from source, but there's a thread on the Stepmania forums with instructions for that, which should be easy to follow if you know how to use your distro's package manager.

StepMania 5 beta 4a has been released.
This is a minor update of beta 4 that exists primarily for Mac OS X 10.10 users. If you've upgraded to the new OS X 10.10 and want to continue using SM5, you'll need to update!
Big thanks to GitHub user jberney for submitting the pull request that fixed this!
This build also fixes some BackgroundEffects errors, and adds some new NoteSkin metrics for themers to try out.

Question: will there ever be an option to indicate a specific directory to look for Themes/Songs/Noteskins (other than the program directory itself and %APPDATA%)?

Open up Preferences.ini and look for the "Additional" lines.
The setting for each one is a comma separated list of directories.
AdditionalCourseFolders is for folders like the Courses folder, AdditionalSongFolders is for folders like the Songs folder, AdditionalFolders is for folders like the stepmania appdata folder.
Here's an example from my Preferences.ini:

I notice something with the Beta 4... I cannt change the Failtype If I choose Inmediate, I still using FailAtTheEnd, also if I lost I can still playing still geting Life and Score ??
The InmediateContinue from Beta 3 was deleted?? I wanna know how to change the Failtype on Beta 4 because choose it from Options doesnt change it.
EDIT: ok I noticed something else... the way for fix that is because in the file preferences.ini inside the folder Save... theres a line called "DefaultModifiers=Overhead" ... before it was DefaultModifiers=2x, FailAtEnd, Overhead" that was why always FailAtend is ON... deleting that now works fine the FailSystem and also... FailInmediateContinues is on the beta 4 but with a new name called DELAYED...
Well at least I figure out how to fix it.

Yeah, DefaultModifiers overrides the DefaultFailType.
Next nightly build will just use DefaultModifiers instead of trying to have a separate DefaultFailType preference. Hopefully that will settle this mess.
