SEGA knows their shit. Even if they are games I've played over and over again they have a cartridge slot. I might actually get this thing but I'll probably save for Sonic Mania.
EDIT: no HDMI..? Hmm... At least it has 80 built in games and the slot. I wouldn't mind the composite but it's a little disheartening knowing that there isn't HD support.

I mostly think it is to give a vibe of nostalgia to fans. I think its fine.Post #4 · Posted at 2016-07-26 11:00:57pm 8.2 years ago

$5 more than the NES Mini with 80 games, SD card use, AND the ability to play your original carts on it.
Sega did what Nintendidn't. +5

This product has been flying around for years now. This is just an update with the MK Trilogy.
Here's a link to an earlier version from 2012: https://www.amazon.com/AtGames-Genesis-Classic-Not-Machine-Specific/dp/B0094H8H7I/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1469574029&sr=8-7&keywords=sega+genesis+classic
I've said this before and I'll say it again: These Genesis clones aren't all that great. They come with some fantastic games, no doubt about that, but they suffer from a dozen+ emulation issues. Audio is mono-exclusive and comes out at an incorrect pitch, the graphics are garbled, game slowdown is common, save functions don't work at all, most games with unique graphics (like Vectorman and Virtua Racing) don't work at all, and glitches are bound to occur in just about any game.
The best I can say about these is that they come with both a cartridge slot AND a SanDisk card slot. Retro fans can plug in their original carts, while modern hippies can emulate games straight off of it.
Here's a video about the issues:
As a devout fan of Sega Genesis since I was three, I implore you guys to save your money and just get the games you want from this system on another platform. Steam has a bunch of them, Wii features them on Virtual Console, some have been re-made in 3D for Nintendo 3DS, and when all else fails, just get an original Genesis.

"Still here, somehow." |
It took me five seconds to realize that the mini Genesis/Mega Drive in the OP is the aforementioned-in-GadgetJax'-post hunkajunk that doesn't emulate sound correctly. I also noticed that one of the games played near the end of the review (at 6:50) was one distributed by Tec Toy, a Brazillian company that distributed quite a bit of Sega-related things in their home country, including an exclusive (and bad) port of Duke Nukem 3D.
Tec Toy aside, ATGames' mini Genesis doesn't even run some games, like Super Street Fighter II as the review shows. I also have the itching feeling that I saw Ashens review a few of these mini Genesis...es (Genesii?), except they were portable.
In short, AnonyWolf, I'd recommend you try to find a real Genesis instead. If you're lucky, try getting one with the CD and 32X built in or included, even if either of the two addons don't really have a lot of games that may be worth playing. Don't bother with the Sega Nomad, either; it's an official, portable Genesis, and this really cool idea wasn't executed well due to the Nomad's extreme sensitivity to motion and the fact that it ate through batteries like the Game Gear did.

Genesis Does What Nintendon't
Someones review:
"This thing is already out, and is hot garbage. The sound processor is terrible, the controllers are RF wireless, like a TV remote, and you have to point the controller directly at it with very little room for error. Of the 80 games on the thing, only 40 are Genesis titles, the other 40 are generic shovelware. This thing is the only Christmas gift I have ever returned in my entire life. Do not buy this thing, it is the most disappointing thing ever.
Seriously, do not be fooled by the marketing push, you can get this any holiday season from any drug store, it's been the exact same box since, like, 2001 and is the same flimsy, cheap, poorly manufactured piece of hot garbage it's always been."
Someones concern:
"BEWARE!!! i have read a head to head review of these two...the nintendo is up to date, fast, allows saves, has good graphics and HD out....the sega, however,is the same crappy knockoff that has been around for years, terrible graphics,no HD out,no saving, and half the games are no name crap(one is literally named 'cross the street')...DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE CLAIM OF MORE GAMES!!! the sega one is a POS,the nintendo one looks like it might be good...better to have 30 quality, working games, that allow saving(!!!),vs a big load of badly ported stuff and total crap...this goes for both the handheld and the console!!"

I find it funny how this has been out in the market for years and now they are building the hype since the NES Mini was announced.
This is old news. Where the hell were they when this was first introduced this?

Personal recommendation:
Love this game.

http://retro-bit.com/generations.html
So, RetroBit is jumping on the NES Mini bandwagon as well, releasing a new version of their Retro-Bit console called 'Generations'. It's slated to feature at least 100 different titles spanning several consoles and developers, support for both AV and HDMI, and a SanDisk slot for who-knows what (probably ROMS). RetroBit actually makes some pretty great clone consoles, especially when compared to AtGames.

Get one of the various collections of Mega Drive games. There's Ultimate Genesis Collection for PS3/360(Unfortunately they used butt-ugly Western Cover Art Sonic in the box art), Sega Genesis Collection for PS2, there are many Sega Arcade games on the Sega Classics Collection for the PS2, there are various Sega Smash Packs... Basically, a lot of various ways to get more bang for your buck.
Also you could emulate these games for free. Practically every licensed Mega Drive game and DEFINITELY every licensed NES game have passed twenty years of age, meaning the patent protecting them has expired. It's dodgy but not through-and-through illegal. And even if it was who cares.
Or you could go my way and get a real fucking Mega Drive or a real fucking NES. They're not hard to find.
